I was wondering if somone could point me to or provide a guide on how to network two computers up together. I have two desktop computers both connected to the wifi network at home but transfer speed is crap. If I connected them both to a adhoc system is there anything special I would have to do? Probably very easy to do but I don't want to waste time if there are better solutions.

Describe how your current network is setup. Are you using B or G equipment?

Thanks for trying to help... I used mspaint to illustrated what it would look like. It is a wireless A setup.. What I want to know is how you hook those two desktop together through a cable... do I need a cross over or a router box?

Your not going to gain any speed by going Ad Hoc instead of running your clients in infrastructure. What kinds of speeds are you getting anyway? What do your signal strength and signal quality numbers look like?

802.11A has a major flaw, the speeds drops soo much the farther the computers are from the WAP. Try moving the wifi cards closer to the WAP if changing from Ad Hoc to infrastructure doesn't help you gain any more speed.

Looking at your illustration I doubt that you can have a solid Network to begin with.

Normally one would connect at least one computer with Cable to the Wireless Cable/DSL Router to make sure that there is always fast solid connection for configuration purposes. Then all other computer should be connected to the Wireless Cable/DSL Router. You do it one at the time and you do not continue unless it is working correctly. By slapping to gather 3 computers that are not functioning correctly does not make the Network working well.

When every thing works well you can try the ?funky? staff, like connecting computer with crossover and creating secondary Networks (as it seems to be the case in your illustration).

However as far as Wireless concern you should start by putting the Laptop next to the Wireless Router, configure the Wireless connection and see what you get in Numerical terms.

May be this can Help.

Thanks Jack... I'm at the point where I want to do the funky stuff. So I do need a crossover cable to directly connect two computers?

Yes, you need a crossover cable to directly connect two computers together without a hub or switch. I've done it a couple of times for a quick connection, works well.
