Will defrag blow my computer up?

Ive had my computer 4 mo.'s and I've transferred a lot of data on and off of it... so I think it might be time to defrag. But is there any chance of like blowing my computer up? A couple years ago, my uncle's computer was screwy so I ran defrag and rebooted... "Missing Operating System." Wheeee. Now defrag=evil to me.

Is it safe to run it? Quantum Fireball LM 30gb in two 15gb partitons (C and D)... can I defrag them both without messing them up or losing the partition or anything?

Defrag is pretty safe, anyway turn off anti-virus & anything else you don`t need that`s running in the background before you defrag, this will improve speed & stability,I`ve never had any problems defragging yet.Defrag C Drive first then D drive after.

Defrag shouldn't screw up your computer unless you have a power loss. Do yourself a favor and run a thorough scandisk on both drives before defragging. That way defrag cannot copy data to a bad sector. I think defrag checks for bad sectors on already written data, but I don't think it checks the unused sectors. I could be wrong though.

Windows 95/98/ME become very inefficient and slow when they are fragmented. The speed disk utility that comes with Norton Utilities is my favorite defragmenter to use.

what os are you using?
and what file system? fat, ntfs?

You might want to try Diskeeper http://www.execsoft.com for a trialware version of their defrag program. It works so much better and faster than that POS Windows ships with. I ONLY use diskeeper to defrag on my machines.

Otherwise, it should work fine, and shouldn't screw your computer up.

Amd Tbird 800mhz. Generic HSF. No ocing or anything. Fat32.
