Will Powercolour accept this RMA?

I bought a 9800SE from Powercolour, to replace my current 9200SE. I was hoping it would softmod to a 9800 pro, but it did not, so I called customer support and claimed stability issues, which is true, several of my games seemed to be flacky since i swapped them out. Anyway, say they check it and see it boots up and runs 3dmark 2001 but do not play any of the games that i play (that are slightly flacky). Will they just send the card i sent in back? I really want one that soft mods and that is more stable. what are the chances they will accept the RMA and not email me back saying im a wanker that does not know how to install it?

If the card isn't stable, then thats a valid reason to RMA a card in my book. Regardless of how the card runs 3Dmark01, if the games you play are not stable then the card is not stable.

you should throw your entire computer out the window. flashing and overclocking is not the manufacturers fault if it does not work you douche. i'm not saying that they are bad practices but it's a chance you take with your hardware.

::adds to DNT list::

If it didn't work properly before the flash, then yes. If it's a post flash issue, then no.

Can someone explain the logic to me here?

What makes folks think they can willfully destroy something through a silly attempt to get something for free, and then try to dump it back on the mfr as if it was the mfr's fault?

What you should do is tell Powercolor exactly what you did and see if they will help you out by fixing or exchanging the card for a small fee.

A 9800SE -> Pro mod actually is done 100% in software, needing no permanent modification to the card. It does overclock it though, and of course isn't guaranteed by any means.

And it also doesn't make you any less of a dick for abusing the RMA process because you were too much of a cheap bastard to buy the performance instead of expecting to get it for free.

What would be the point of trying to softmod a card that already didn't work?

I'm not gonna buy that story if the OP tells it.

Look all you crusaders in the thread be quiet for a second.

Yeah i do not believe that he should RMA it as Softmodding can cause dmg much more likely that OCing.

However why are all of you reporting him, flaming him, acting as moderators and cops. Come on grow up!! Let him and powercolor deal with the consequences.

Because what he is doing is causing the cost of video cards to go up, and it affects EVERYONE on these boards.

Still yes it affects us, but it is not your job to go crusading around rooting out bad guys.

If he does something wrong let him face the consequences.

There DO seem to be a lot of these threads.

Must be part of the "Master Plan to Overthrow Anandtech" or whatever that document was called...

Who faces the consequences that befall the rest of us due to fraudulent RMA's?

If it affects me, then I am automatically entitled to do something about it, and I am certainly entitled to give my opinion on it.

I hope they tell you to use the card as a rectal suppository. You deserve to be stuck with nothing - you make hardware prices high for us honest people.

Go to hell, kthx.

Why don't you bite the bullet. Post it on EBAY stating the reason youre selling it is because it won't softmod but otherwise works and start the bidding at for 0.01 with NR and take what you can get and go buy what you really want a 9800pro. NO RMA just the thing to do. Or I'll take your 9800se off your hands for a few bucks if you really say that is not running up par.

I do it all the time with my hardware. Since I've been doing this for sometime & make sure I do plenty of research before I do it I'd say I've had 90% success when softmoding or changing physical properties to hardware. I don't see anything wrong with doing what you want to your own hardware.

I will give you a fine example of a good softmod. The Radeon 8500. As some of us know the later models to come out from ATI used if not the same similar GPUs in the video cards (Sneaky guys). I was able to softmod my 8500LE to a 8500, 9000, & a 9100.
