Win 2K DMA problem

I am using Win2K with a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40GB, Via 4in1 4.32 FINAL.

My main harddrive is detected as PIO Mode although the bios is set to autodetect. Win2K is set to autodetect it as well.

It's really confusing...

I know it has been using Ultra DMA before but all of a sudden its not.

IDE Channel > Advanced Settings > Transfer Mode > DMA if available >

I'll throw this in this area I guess..

BUt my Bios detects my burner as PIO 4, but Windows is actually running it at DMA (probably 33, it's not UDMA). I dont get it, but it acts like it's going in DMA.. I've seen PIO and it's definitely not running that slow.

in your bios, cant you force it to select dma?

in some bios's, such as Abit's Kt7-r, and with some HDD's you would have to actually turn off DMA in the bios for windows to accept it as DMA. wierd huh? but it worked for one of my systems, also if it is a ata100 HDD try installing/reinstalling sp2 for win2k. that has the official fix for ata100 support.

Ok Folks I tried the info posted on a previous thread (similar to this) and it worked. The question was how do you enable DMA for a Plextor 12/10/32 CD-RW drive. Well I place a jumper on the &quot;reserved&quot; slot and it worked. UDMA 33 instead of PIO. Now I have further question. There are 2 such pins for a jumper on my CD-ROM would it work the same way?


I think I will try it and let you all know.

actually it is a Ultra 66 Drive but it can be flashed up to U100. This is quite a puzzle.
