Win 2K security/permissions question

Hi. I have been trying to find a solution to a problem I am having on my two home machines for weeks now ..to no avail. After installing WIN2K on my machine I could go into control panel and change settings ...display etc no problem.When I first set up the machine I used Administrator as the default logon (I know bad thing to do) and I could change anything as Administrator. Here lately,last month or so,I cannot change the time ,for example. Says access denied. Display properties,access denied.I have posted on forums and everyone tells me to change permissions/groups. I have attempted to do so but I have come to the realization thay I do not have proper knowledge to do this. So my question is: Can someone walk me through a logon/permission/password reset or change? I just am at a loss with this. Thanks for any insight on this dilema. Stephen. Also when I click on passwords in control panel I get this...NULL not a valid win 32 application????? Thanks again.

Are you still logging in as administrator, now?

Yes I am. That's the only way I can log on.As far as I know.

I don't have a copy of win2k on hand to go step by step with this but I've done it plenty of times. I may skip a couple steps. But here is what you should check for permissions.

On the desktop, right-click my computer. Manage it. Choose Local Users and Groups. Open up the users folder and you should be able to see your Administrator account. If you want to change the password (probably unneccessary), you can double click that and then an option to reset the password would come up. Only someone with administrator priviliiges can change a password this way. Close this window.

Back out to the groups choice. Open the administrators group. Verify that your administrator is in the group. DO NOT remove it if it is.

I think at this point I'd like to hear your response back as to what this did for you. I want to know if the computer allowed you to complete all those steps and the administrator account was still a member of the administrators group.

I still cannot even change the time. Access denied!!!!!:disgust::|

OK, next place to check out. Open up the Control Panel and go to adminstrative tools then bring up local security policy. Look in the Security Options and User Rights Assignments and run through those. If you can't find something in those lists that clues you in, I am out of suggestions. Have you made any changes recently or installed any programs that might give insight as to what caused this to start?
