Win 2K upgrade issues

Recently upgraded from Win 98SE to 2000 and have 2 questions:

1. Shut Down. With Win 98 shut down would also power off the computer. With Win 2K I get the dialog box that it is now safe to turn off the computer, but no auto shutdown. I want auto shutdown. What should I do? Note: Motherboard is an IWILL KK-266-R.

2. Hearts. I liked the hearts game in Win 98. When 2000 was installed, I lost hearts. Is it incompatable with Win 2K? Is there an easy way to get it back?

Thanks

When I shut down in my Win2k Pro, I get a dialog that has a selection dropdown list. The options are:

Shut Down
Restart
Log off Administrator
Stand By

The default is the last one used last time you shut down. You don't have this? Are you sure you are in Win2k here? Try looking up Power Options in Help.

I can try moving your Hearts over to your Win2k machine. Look for the executable in Win98 that runs hearts, probably hearts.exe. Copy that over to your Win2k machine. If it's in the Windows directory in Win98, put it in C\Winnt on your Win2k machine.

Thanks Muse. I do get the same drop down menu as you do. When I select shutdown, it does close win 2K and it gives me the box saying it is now ok to shut down the computer. But I have to shut down manually, it is not automatic. To make it worse, I don't have an off switch on my computer (Antec 1030 case), just an on button and a restart button.

Thanks

Hmm. I presume your MB supports the autoshutdown. I think that's a feature of the ATX specification. Your MB is ATX form factor? Is your Antec case ATX, IOW? I think you will find an answer somewhere, maybe in your MB BIOS. As a workaround you could plug into a powerstrip or better yet a powerstrip-surge suppressor that has an on-off switch. A guy recommended that to me a few years back (AT MB) to preserve your on-off switch in your case. Now, you have an on switch but it doesn't shut it off? That strip should do both, I suppose.

Have you tried pushing the "On" button to turn off the power? I have a very similar antec case with an "On" button and a reset button--the "On" button also kills the power.

Secondly, the reason you have to manually kill the power has to do with ACPI I think. Try checking out control panel-> system->hardware-device manager->Computer and see if you get "Standard PC" or "ACPI PC" or some equilavent of the second. If it says "Standard PC" you need to change that driver to an ACPI enabled one for which there are lots of old posts about how to do. If it says ACPI, I'm not sure where your problem is. For more information on ACPI searching will serve you well.

good luck
