Every open program consumes resources, and some don't release them entirely when the program is closed. When resource stacks get low, computer slows to a crawl and finally dies. Only way to recover resources is to reboot ... or upgrade to w2k, which doesn't have resource problem.

I have wondered the very same thing. Unfortunately Windows98SE does not release the resources even after a program is closed. There are programs that you can buy or get as freeware like Release Ram and such but in the end I think you just have to learn to live with it. Win2K is a good option if you do not play games otherwise stick with 98 or maybe try WindowsME.

This is one of the main reasons why Win98 isn't that great. Memory management. Win 98 always seems to slowly lose memory as the day progresses, requiring a reboot within 24-48 hours time. I dare you to keep your computer on the entire week, and use it daily =]

Hah. I just had Win98 running for 25 hours just yesterday and today. Resources went down to 52%. No doubt I had to restart.

I just downloaded MemTurbo, which claims to recover all that lost ram, similar to a reboot. There are several options, and it displays a time-history graph of your memory resources, so you can watch them leak away. All you have to do is press a button, and voila, you get your memory back. After a couple evenings of use and no reboots, it appears to work great. 30 days free, and $20 to register, so have a look. memturbo.com or cnet.com . . .
