WIN PVR 1800 QAM capable, but.....

I am not very knowledgeable on the HTPC front however I must be missing something. I thought as long as the tuner the would convert the QAM signal that MCE would be fine displaying it? However Hauppage's web site says that their 1800 is QAM capable but in big red print "Note: Vista Media Center does not currently support QAM TV. The WinTV-HVR-1800 board itself is QAM ready. " Any explanation would be greatly beneficial since I am looking at running my cable line directly into the tuner in my PC (not necessarily with this tuner mind you, but possibly).

Vista Media Center does not support QAM. You have to use Hauppauge's crappy software if you want to make use of the QAM features. I'm sure QAM support will be added to Media Center eventually, but I wouldn't expect a Media Center update until after Vista SP1 is released.
