When you defrag, you defrag a volume not a disk. You won't install linux on the same volume, just on the same disk (I assume, based on what you're asking). If your volume takes the full disk, you won't be able to do it. You can't shrink a volume.

?????????? WHAT? Fips, partition magic, part, and alot of other programs allow you to shrink and grow partitions sizes... dont think fips likes ntfs though ;-)

When you shrink a partition the data should all be moved to an area within the confines you set for the new partition size. I'd suggest using partition magic for this.

anything available thats shareware/freeware that'll do it because all i could find is fips and it doesnt like my ntfs. Partition magic demo just lets you use the program but doesnt make actual changes to your hard drive. Lemme know if you have something.

Thanks

I think there is a freeware program called part.exe ....I dont have a copy though, but it should do it.

nortons speed disk would let you move those files to the begining of the drive, but you'll have to buy a disto of systemworks to get it. Then fips should have no problem re-sizing the volume. Personally, I prefer not to dual boot Microsoft os's with linux, If your boot files get corrupted you lose both of them. since linux doesn't need as much performance as micro$ofts os's it might be better to just get something like a 633Ghz p3 or something to that effect with qualified hardware and run linux seperately.
