Win2k Not stable for me...

So I'm surfing around the internet and then IE freezes. Can't do anything about it. Ctrl Alt Del does not function, I have to reboot manually. I've notice this problem occurs faster when browsing multimedia and graphic intensive websites but it also happens while just browsing a site like yahoo only not as much. I've applied the AMD Win2k patch and it seems to have stopped D2 from crashing. Could it be a heat problem? Does Win2k require the system to be cooler than win9x? Here are my stats:

900 TBird
CLA GF2
256 mb Mushkin High perf rev 2 PC133@222
SB Live
Asus A7V
Kingston NIC

I've also installed the latest drivers and have SP1 installed.

Thanks

But I have had this problems with some of my customers... I work for Roadrunner and I have had peoples computers lockup hard because of a bad NIC, a NIC sharing an IRQ... EX: videocard or soundcard will do it in a hurry!

If the operating system is a clean install and you still encounter problems it may be attributed to the videocard and its drivers unless generic detonator drivers are used.

Last year when I was using a creative voodoo banshee (I know it is not the same) my browser would freeze at some sites I visited and would bring the entire OS (win98) down. I talked with CS at MS ans Creative LAbs. After a few months Creative Labs issued a patch to fixed that problem. However, I spent too much time RMA the darn thing when nothing was wrong with it at least hardware wise.

Try to reinstall drivers again. And update your VIA drivers for your mobo maybe that will help.

Sincerely

You can run verifier.exe to check for driver problems. If it doesn't find any, it might be hardware related. I recently had a spate of unexplainable crashes in win2k/NT 4 and I eventually fixed the problem by resetting my cmos setup.

If your NT box crashes it is one of three things:

(1) Non-WHQL Hardware.
(2) Non-WHQL Drivers.
(3) A Virus.

Of course other things like overclocking and overheating can cause crashes as well. The most likely cause of your problem is drivers. Try to get WHQL versions for all of your major system components (video card, motherboard etc). Failing that, try getting the latest official drivers and avoid beta releases or "leaked" drivers.

Alphacowboy,

I think you've hit the nail ont he head. It probably is because of that. I think I'll try and move the cards around. Also, I've noticed that whenever my comp locks up, my DSL Modem's led "Line TX" and "Line RX" blinks a lot. Thought hat could be a whole seperate thing I don't know. As for connection, I am using PacBell DSL. As for drivers, I'm using the latest of everything. I'm using the drivers for my CLA from Nvidia. I have not overclocked my system, yet anyway. Thanks for all the replies.
