Win2k Pro question?

About a year ago, a friend of mine brought his computer over for me to fix. It originally had WinME on it, however when he presented it to me, it had Win2K Pro. He said he got it from the IT Guy at work. However, he had a critical program that simply wouldn't run under Win2K, so I had him buy XP and everything was A-OK.
He told me to keep the Win2K, since he had paid "good money" for it. I declined at the time, simply because I didn't have any need for it.

Anyways, he recently had a massive heart attack and died. A few months later, his wife called and said his system had died, too. HDD went south and I offered to fix it, but she said she would rather have a new system, so I hooked her up with a Dell deal.

She gave me the old system, along with the Win2K disk. I dismantled the old HP and parted it out, but wound up with the Win2K disk.

My question is, is this disk legal and is it legal for resale? I don't have much in the way of details of where it came from, except what he said before he died. I do know it isn't being used on the computer it was on.

This is a description of what I have, the disk says Win2K Pro OEM for one or two processors. It's obviously a MS CD, since it's got all the holograms that it should. The thing that leaves a question in my mind is that it came in a plain paper sleave with only a sticker type label on the back of it that has the COA or VLK.

Does this sound right? I've never dealt with a MS OS that only had a sticker label like that. I this common for Win2K Pro OEM or should I be concerned with the validity of this?

Thanks, Rick

Yeah, I am! Can't even delete all the crap that wound up on here. Says I'm not the author????

WTF, I still need an answer, so, hopefully this one will work.

I would call Microsoft and explain the situation to them. That way, you know that if any problems arise, you can say that Microsoft allowed the sale of it. I would think that you could sell it, but these things are tricky.

Thanks SpeedFreak03. That's probably the best idea, but since I don't know exactly where this came from, I'm a little hesitant to do that. I certainly don't want to get anyone in hot water, especially someone I don't even know. The only facts I have to work with are that it was installed on my friend's system and he did say he paid for it. Beyond that, all I know is that it's no longer on that system or any other that I know of. I was just curious about the key being on a white sticker on the back of a CD sleeve. I've never encountered that before, even with OEM MS products. Most I've seen had a nice looking fairly fancy sticker that you affixed to the system after installation. This one could be removed and affixed, but it wouldn't have anything to identify it as a MS product other than the key itself. I could actually make one of these myself with my printer and a label.

As I said, it's not worth getting me or anyone else in trouble over. Just ran across it the other day in my software box and got to wondering about it. Not sure I'd feel comfortable selling it, so I'll probably just hold on to it or throw it away.

Thanks, Rick

perfectly legal 2 sell, imho, however, since its oem, it will only work in systems by that oem
manufacturer, unfortunately, that reduces it usefullness and value alot.....
