win2k problems

this is a rather complicated problem both for me to convey it in an understandable manner and the problem itself. a while back my bro and i built my computer. a nice machine with a 40gigs hd, 512megs of ram, a p3 866mhz, abit motherboard with dual processor slots, soundblaster live value card, voodoo5 pci video card, 16x dvd-rom, 8x20 cdr, and a 17in flat panel monitor. the machine (alon with our other two comps) is running win2k on a network. the machine my parents use has a linksys router that makes the network. the problem i am about to describe does not happen with any of the other comps at my house.. just mine. my computer, as good as it may seem, is sssllooww. it literally takes 10min to restart. for those of you familiar with win2k after the login screen my comp just sits there, you can move the mouse and all but it looks as if it is doing nothing. after bout 10min my desktop and its icons appear. wierd. my bro (who is fairly techno-savvy) said that it was something about win2k and the router arguing with each other.. i don't know if anyone can build upon this. also, many of the day to day operations are just ssllow to execute. say, for instance, i go to a site that was a lot of pop ups. if i wish to get rid of them quickly i right click them in the start menu and choose 'close'. but after i do that the right click menu just stays there for about 2-3secs again, apperantly not doing anything. it slows me down. another thing.. my comp freezes up A LOT! if i have photoshop open, ie open, several images open, and several windows open you'd think my comp would be fine.. but if i go to close, say, photoshop i have to go to the task manager and choose 'end program' which often doesn't work by itself and i end up having to relogin... very annoying. i could go on and on about this but i feel i have no need to. if anyone has any suggestions, comments, or ANYTHING to help on this i'd be muuuucch appreciative. thanks. =)

Need some more details here.

Are you using a VIA chipset on that Abit board? If so, do you have the latest 4in1 drivers?

Do you have SP2 installed?

Do you have the latest IE (5.5 i believe)? If so, the latest patches and updates?

Are your machines all using TCP/IP to talk to each other? If so, try binding Netbeui instead, it tends to be faster.

Not only those, but make sure DMA is enabled. To double check. go into device manager, then go into ide/atapi controllers, go through each of hte primary and secondary channels.

Just start the install, the setup will take care of the rest.

As for Netbeui, it comes with windows, just goto your network bindings and add new protocol, select Netbeui... do this for all the machines or else they won't be able to see each other.

heh.. well i swear that that installation wasn't there a second ago... well, i've done that and it's done. so now that i'm a proven idiot yer gonna have to explain to me in more detail about how to use netbeui instead of tcp/ip. i'm searching around trying to find out how right now... thanks.

oh, phuck netbeui, man

Tcp/ip is good for all your needs.

if you interested, and i mean really interested, in finding out what
was wrong with your system in the aspect of networking, go and install
a copy of sniffer from nti. and decypher the trace...
