1) my sisters office has a network with 6 comps running WIN2K. All of them have some files that need to be shared and some that shouldnt be.

So what I did was set up 1 user each on each comp under the normal users group (to access unprotected files on other comps) and 1 each under the power users group (to access the private files).

However, when i deny access to a particular folder to all users except the power user on that comp, its still is accessible from other comps. Have tried various combinations of users on the allowed and denied lists but nothing seems to be working.

is there something obvious that i'm missing or whats wrong?

2) She created a new folder on the desktop. Logged off and logged back in. The folder isnt there any more. Any ideas as to why this could be happening?

you need to provide some very specific details for this one. i can't tell how you have user accounts set up.

in any case, you should not have sharing based on power user groups and other built-in groups. go onto each machine and create an account for all 6 employees on EACH machine. create them as power users (doesn't matter really but this is good). have each user set the password for their account on each machine the same for convenience. then go to the Advanced tab on the Users and Groups dialog box and click "Advanced" for advanced group management. right click the groups folder and select new group. create a group called public and put everyone in there who will need access to the public shares on that particular machine. follow the same steps to create a private group.

then go to the folders you need to share. enable sharing. remove the everyone group from the sharing --> permissions page and add whichever groups should be in there. assign them the appropriate permissions. then go to the security tab and do the same. repeat this process for every machine. users will have to retype their user names and passwords when they connect to a share on another machine, but they should be able to use the same username and password throughout as long as you created the accounts the same across all machines for each user.

as for why your sister's folder disappeared i'm not sure why. could be that you changed her from a power user to guest or something and she has no write permissions so her changes are lost. who knows? anyway hook us up with more details for more help.

good luck,
big boi
