I know that Win2k didn't support ata100 when it first came out. When M$ released service pack 2, they said that it¡¯s supposed to fix this problem. Well, that¡¯s just what they said, they might be just lying! I¡¯ve installed service pack 2 on my Win2k system, but it says my ibm 60gxp ata100 hard drive is only running under PIO mode only. M$ says that it¡¯s just a reporting bug, they said something like this ¡°when your drive is running at ultra ata100 mode (DMA mode 5), win2k sp2 will report it as PIO mode, it¡¯s just a reporting error, nothing to worry about, your drive is working fine...¡±
Well, yeah, my drive DOES work under win2k sp2, but so what? Running at this PIO mode slows down my computer a lot. Sisoft Sandra cant even complete the hard drive benchmark (it just locks up the computer, even after running the benchmark for 30 min.)
At first I thought it was the Sandra problem, coz I heard lots of ppl couldn¡¯t benchmark their hard drive w/ Sandra. But after running my new computer (win2k sp2, TB 1.4@1.6GHz, 512MB DDR, GF2 Pro 64MB) for about 2 weeks, I became very suspicious, coz I found that my new computer is running even slower than my wife¡¯s old computer (win2k sp2, Classic Athlon 700@900MHz, 384MB SDR, TNT2 Ultra) in basically all applications except gaming (everyone should know the video cards made the difference here of coz).
I didn¡¯t think it was the hard drive¡¯s problem at first, I tried troubleshooting other parts and different drivers, etc, even tried clean installing win2k again, still no luck. then I thought it might be the hard drive gone bad, so I ghosted the ibm drive to my old quantum ata66 drive, and boot up with this drive, woohoo!!! it flies!!!! Hm... then I had this ¡°ata100 under win2k¡± problem in my mind, so I used the ibm hard drive feature tool to set the ibm drive down to ata66 mode, and boot up again with the ibm drive, yup, I was right, it¡¯s running everything faster than ever. Now it can complete the Sandra hard disk benchmark in just a few min, the score (a little more than 25000) is even a better than the reference ata100 hard drive¡¯s score (24000).
Now, has anyone of you guys had this problem before? Running slow and getting low hard drive benchmark score or no score under win2k sp2 with ata100 drives? Try my solution here: disable the ata100 mode with your hard drive¡¯s tool (download from your hard drive manufacturer¡¯s website), and run it only at ata66 mode. It should boost up the performance of your system a lot! ...until M$ comes up with a real solution to the ata100 support problem in win2k, maybe sp3? Or will there be an sp3 at all? Who knows, M$ is trying to get everyone upgrade to XP, so they might just let all those win2k problems unfixed. if you wana have them fixed? M$ will tell you to get XP. Good job, M$!!!:|
