I reformatted my harddisk, everything went ok fdisk, format, scandisk. Now when I try to install win98, after setup wizard comes black box(about 2X3") in middle of screen and that's it, computer freezes. Computer is same as before formatting.Any ideas?
your win kit has some bad files, which is more likely since install freezes in the same portion. try another install kit. if that doesn't work, hook your hdd to another comp and run a surface check
i bet the black box is just a message popping up that's saying "WARNING!! VIRUS! BOOT SECTOR WRITE. Y/N" Or something to that extent. At one point, when installing windows , windows would write to the boot sector and then a message would pop up saying that a possible virus was writing to the boot sector and it'd ask me yes or no to continue. What could be happening in your situation is that the message comes up, but you can't see it. I don't know if this is the real problem, but it's worth a shot. Try going into your BIOS and change the Boot Sector Write Protection (is that what it's called?) to disabled.
oh, yes, forgot about that.
actually, that on-board anti-virus (if you can call it this way) can output only in text mode. installer is already in graphic mode when starts writing to disk (after it does all the checks) and it simply freezes.
