Windows 10 1607 (OS Build 14393.51)

The Update was released a week ago and it slowly gets on the online Upgrading system.

Microsoft makes also available ISO files of Win 10, 10N both have Home and Pro (pay attention to the x86 or x64 versions since they are on different ISO).

To make an ISO a Bootable DVD One can use one of the many freeware like – http://www.imgburn.com/

To make the ISO a Bootable USB this freeware work very well too – https://rufus.akeo.ie/

Here there is a page that summarizes the Goodies in the new release.

http://www.howtogeek.com/248177/whats-new-in-windows-10s-anniversary-update/

Personally I do not waste time and resource on online upgrades.

I downloaded the ISO file of the current Install image and burned it to a DVD.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/

I use Acronis TI 2016. It cost $29.99 but it much faster than any of the Freewares (takes about 10 Min. to back up a 50GB SSD to a fast HD).

Then I Start the current Installation and do an in-place Install (I.e., I maintained my additional programs/apps and personal files from the Win 10 1511 install).

At this time I upgraded three computers all ran a valid active Win 10 1155 ver.

Of the three computers Two did the Upgrade in 45 Minutes and everything works very well as before.

One computer refuses the Upgrade and aborted itself after 30 Min. of running and doing “nothing”. At this point I have No clue to why, I’ll deal with it in the near future.

Please Note that the new installation adds a Windows.old folder to allow reverse of the Upgrade (I think it is only valid for 10 days).

The Windows.old folder of this upgrade is almost as big as the actual version 1155 installation to be prepared with a lot of empty space.

As a frame of reference install of 25GB Windows 10 1511 9with Office 2013 and few other suits), after upgrade to Win 10 1607 added to the Boot SSD 20 GB Windows.old folder

Just ran the update on my PC (just told me it was available, Update Tuesday I guess).

Update ran fine, all my drives are A-OK. Saw it reloaded the annoying "Get Office" thing even though my Office 2007 still works fine. It didn't mess with any of my default programs, privacy settings, or anything else like that.

It did nuke a PC game install I had (Supreme Commander), saying it wasn't compatible A little odd, probably will just reinstall it if I decide to play it again at some point. It ran fine before so I can't see what would have changed, and I'd really prefer if Windows didn't assume something was not compatible and uninstall it for me. That is a bit irritating, especially when it isn't accurate as the initial Win10 install last year left a program loaded that absolutely was not compatible lol.

Jack, I used the Media Creation too to download the ISO file. I created a DVD, and flash media drive for Win 10 Pro Anniversary. I tried upgrading two computers, one desktop and one laptop. In both cases when it came to the choice between upgrade and clean install, it would only do a clean install. A message said that it could no upgrade because I had files in locations other than those specified by Microsoft. Bummer!

Yes, I do have a lot of customized file locations, but it has never been a problem. 1511 upgraded perfectly. So, I simply backed out and left 1511 untouched. It works perfectly and I can envision nothing that would make the Anniversary edition a good choice if it meant clean install and facing several days worth of work to get it as useful as 1511.

I have never run into this before, and it is a disappointment, but - with a shoulder shrug I'll just keep on keeping on with 1511.

Seems weird, my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads libraries are on a different physical drive than the rest of Windows, and I didn't run into any issues. Although I didn't use the media creation tool for the update, I just ran it from Windows Update directly.

Hmm.. Interesting I actually do not use the Standard Users/My Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads.

I have a personal structure under a personal Folder. I then change the Default Office and similar Apps to use my private struture.

Why? I believe that that adds security, and better ways to control the content under HIPPA..

Putting staff in your system helps to avoid behaviors like the Win 10 Upgrades erasing staff at MS discretion, and or other 3rd party entities "messing" with system at their will.

As an example Win 7 Games like hearts/Solitaire etc that are deleted whether One wants it or not.

I also do not use the media creation Tool because few times in the past after burning the ISO I ended with corrupted DVD.

I use the Link - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10ISO/

Get the ISO File and use ImgBurn to create an Install DVD.

That said it all might not related to the process that One uses since the same DVD upgraded in 40-45 minute two computers with No Glighe, and then, a 3rd computer refuses to lend itself to the Upgraded.

The three computers are 95% identical using same Model motherboards and Graphics cards with Q9500 Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU.

I am Not very surprise. I perceive the Model that the upgrade/update of Win 10 is using as a sort of an ""Ethereal Beta OS"".

P.S. One thing that probably does not matter. I am using only SSDs for all my C: OS installations.

When I initially tried to update my alienware laptop the WU version would fail so I tried the media creation tool. When it ran it tried to tell me that it couldn't keep my files and wanted to clean install 1607 to which I said no. Several hours later I was able to use the windows 10 upgrade assistance tool and it was able to perform the upgrade from 1511 without incident keeping everything intact.

Also, maybe it was because I run Win 10 using Start 10. Anyway, I'll follow Puffinstuff's lead and try with the assistance tool.

Tried the Assistant Tool, and it didn't help on the desktop, but it succeeded on the laptop. Having said that, I will clone the laptop back to 1511 - the Anniversary edition is a non-starter for me because the only way to get rid of the LockScreen is to eliminate the logon password. Microsoft is doing its best to tie our hands. 1511 does everything I need in good fashion. The Anniversary Edition is less useful to me, so we'll stick with 1511.

AFAIK, Win 7/8/10 all versions.

Type into the Command line - control userpasswords2

This menu opens, Uncheck the Box User must enter a user ..........

I guess I don't understand why do you want to disable the lock screen if you have a password? Boot up, type in your password, and done. If you don't want to see the lock screen, just don't have it automatically lock the computer after your screensaver timeout or whatever.

Seems totally like a non-issue to me. Exactly how I have my PC set up, works fine with the Anniversary edition this way too.

I'm confused

Well, the lockscreen pops up and sits there with a nice picture and a date/time. To get to the next password logon, I have to click on the lockscreen. Then up pops the logon screen where I enter the PW, and Win 10 then loads. The lockscreen serves no useful purpose - is simply (for me) an unnecessary layer to the logon screen. It can be automated if I set the logon to no PW - it then boots and loads Windows. Bottom line - I went back to 10 Pro 1511 and will just stay there. There is nothing useful for me in the Anniversary Edition. Another huge negative for me is that the Anniversary Edition does not allow my clock app enough space. 1511 does.

Don't have to click it. Just hit almost any key and it will go to the password screen. When I go to type my password I just tap the Ctrl key or something, I don't even touch the mouse.

I had trouble on my "Wintel W8 Pro" Windows 10-based mini-PC, with the lock screen, when I was using it as a HTPC to listen to internet radio with it.

As you all know, it has the Intel iGPU in it, Cherry Trail. Well, upon waking my "monitor" (an older 720P HDTV), sometimes the audio would continue, but it would be hella scratchy-sounding. I would have to stop the stream, and re-start it to fix it.

This was hampered by the Win10 lock screen, as sometimes, after waking it, the lock screen would just sit there, and I could click-and-hold and scroll it up and down, but it wouldn't disappear on it's own after clicking, it would just loosely hang around. I often couldn't get the Win10 UI to respond.

Part of that is a bad interaction with my el-cheapo generic "PC Remote Control" from Amazon. It has a USB IR sensor, and it randomly, after a time of being plugged in, acts like a button is constantly being held down or released. This happens with multiple units, and appears to be a design defect.

IMHO, the "lock screen" is simply just one giant PITA.

Oh yeah, I didn't have any password on my Windows 10 "Wintel W8 Pro" mini-PC either.

Issue found when upgrading Win10 Home 64-bit from TH2 version 1511 to Redstone version 1607. If using the official boot/update media method, the installation process halts for the typing in of the 25 character product key. No option to skip, as is offered when doing a fresh install. So: used BelarcAdvisor to collect the currently used & activated product key, but the upgrade install process did not recognize that key as valid. Laptop owner now waiting for Windows Update to officially offer the update, instead of the apparently faulty USB thumb drive method.
Note: the Samsung laptop originally came from the factory with Windows 7 Home 64-bit installed. So, the 25 character activation code should be stored in the machine's firmware, correct?

Not likely. That didn't start until Windows 8. Win7 used SLIC.

How do I turn updates off?

Disabling the Windows Update service should do the trick. This should stop any updates from coming in, which wouldn't be the best idea from a security perspective.

---

I thought the anniversary update was going to bring customisation to those square buttons at the bottom of the action centre notification list? At least MS finally fixed that stupid airplane mode bug, seemingly.

Recently I learnt a new way that an inexperienced user might accidentally kick themselves off the Internet - if one clicks on the network systray icon, then clicks on the 'wifi' box, it disables wifi. Why on earth such an option needs to be that accessible is beyond me, especially when 'airplane mode' sits right beside it, but hey-ho.

On a separate note, IMO it seems a bit odd that the action centre seems to be the new tool for providing notifications, yet the system tray is still exactly as it ever was. I would have thought that it would make more sense to have all the systray icons on the action centre, and maybe one actually appears on the system tray if it has an active notification?

IMO Win10's UI still seems like a work in progress rather than a finished product, but perhaps it's a symptom of MS's lack of long-term vision/strategy for its products.

Well you can turn them select one on an off
Go to Settings -> Notifications and Alerts

I think that is the intent but obviously the 3rd part developers would have to support it. Now they may not given the systray still is there and works, most probably wont update

I think that is a bit of it, but if you look at Apple, they have changed something in the UI in every release since Snow Leopard. So I do not think its just MS.

Ah, ta.

I think that is a bit of it, but if you look at Apple, they have changed something in the UI in every release since Snow Leopard. So I do not think its just MS.

I did not mean "if you change something, it means you lack vision", I was referring to the fact that more than one major area of the UI seems to be splurged into two parts, neither encompassing the whole of the other. For example, Settings vs. Control Panel (this would make sense if Settings encompassed options that must be accessible primarily via touch, and CP covered options that must be accessible via pointer interface, but for example the systray is obviously not touch friendly yet is in the Settings app), and action centre vs. systray notifications. For the systray I think I would have just moved it into a corner of the action centre UI, with the exception of the main four Windows systray icons.

The Bluetooth UI functionality/representation on systray/action centre still seems like an afterthought, it's both on the systray and the action centre UI, which seems like a waste in pointer interface terms and a horrible cludge for touch users. I'm wondering whether the action centre is deemed mainly for touch users, yet all the main Windows notifications go there.

---

By the way, I used the media creation tool on Saturday and the ISO I downloaded is for the anniversary release of Win10 64.

I find the sign-in screen for the anniversary edition rather strange, the way that the login prompt is translucent on the lock screen background. I first thought the graphics drivers needed updating!

The Anniversary update creates a problem with Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential (at least with this version). The update removes Windows Server Launchpad and the server connect software rendering the back-up on Server impossible. Reinstall of the connect software is practically impossible, at least this is my experience and experience of a lot of "sufferers". So far Microsoft is aware of the problem, but had not come up with a solution. In my opinion, it I absolutely unacceptable that Windows 10 refresh release is not compatible with Microsoft own Server version. If anybody has any suggestion or remedy, I would greatly appreciate it....

According to this MS Blog post (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com...rver-2012-r2-essentials-for-client-connector/) the update that is listed on that site should fix it.

From the way I read it, is the update is installed on the server and have the win10 client reconnect to it.
