Windows 10 ethernet issues

Hello guys, hope you all had a pleasant Christmas/Holidays.

Just finished setting up my new rig, and I had been having trouble setting it up to my internet connection. I went ahead and did a fresh install of windows 10 on that pc, and I recently upgraded my laptop to windows 10 as well. My older pc was hard wired, however, it died on me after almost 10 years of service. RIP.

It had been months since I had anything hard wired to my router, and it had some hiccups now and then but internet had been acting well, until I wanted to set up a wired connection to start updating and setting up drivers, for my new build.

On windows 7 I was getting "local network not getting ip" or something like that. However, now that everything is running windows 10, I have tried my laptop, and my new tower, and they can't connect to the net with the ethernet wired. When I try to fix it I keep getting the message "One or more network protocols are missing on this computer." As windows tries to fix it, it ends the process. I really thought that it was a hardware issue and did a couple of resets and installs, updated drivers through flash drives, etc. but nothing worked.

I tried ip configs, renews, dns flushing, I tried what feels like everything and nothing seems to make it work. I reset the router back to its original setting at least 3 times and powered it countless more, but to no avail.

I was able to snag an old wireless usb and that's how my new pc is getting to download updates, but that is just a temporary fix, once I start to play online I can't use that. Anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the problem or what steps to follow. It is very aggravating and there are so many ways online to "fix" it, some work for some people, but I keep hitting a wall. I know very little of networking, however I would be willing to try some of you guy's advice.

ps. my router is a crappy zhone 6519 and my internet provider is consolidated communications.

It could be your wired ethernet cables, possibly.

One thing to try, might be to download a Linux Live ISO, and burn it to a DVD (use ImgBurn on Windows), or a USB stick (use Rufus on Windows). Then try booting the desktop PC, while connected by ethernet, and see if Linux boots properly and can access the internet over that connection. If Linux connects fine, then your problem is mostly likely a software issue with Windows / drivers. If Linux doesn't connect either, then it may be an issue with your cables, or your router.

Not sure of a solution really myself, but if you all ready had problems in 7, just upgrading to 10 isn't going to automatically solve it.

Assuming you have four ports on the router, have you tried them all? Tried different cables?

Two computers not being able to connect wired rules out the computers or the OS. That's too much of a coincidence.

If you're using the same cable, you need to try a new one.

Then, try all the ports on the router.

If still no joy, you need a new router.

The Linux suggestion is worth trying before considering this, but what security software do you have installed?

Of course, different error. Totally thinking its an OS error now, than when I was on windows 7 tough

Yeah I tried different wires, different ports, still nothing. My brothers computer can get on the internet wired but I can't on that port. Tried to wire my laptop and my new pc wired and they both give me the same message, but are fine wirelessly.

Certainly worth a shot. I will try this and see what type of error I get. Wish I knew a bit more on the error messages so I could look those up on linux.

You could take your laptop over to the router and try connecting there to see if anything changes.

Another thought is to try setting a static IP address on either the laptop or tower's wired NIC and then see if you can ping the router's internal IP. If it works then you know it's a problem with DHCP and not the physical cabling.

I was able to play around with the ports on the router, and although the router settings say they are all good. Only one is letting me connect to the internet. Thanks for the suggestion. Will have to make a trip and get a new router from my provider.
