So I installed windows 10 earlier this morning.

It was an update installation over windows 7, solid machine @ least 2 years old

Logged in, thought it was a little slow and decided to restart

Machine never restarted, just a black screen, no Bios post, loud fan

WTH ????

I see other posts out there with the same issue

If you aren't getting a POST, unplug everything (I would start with drives) and see if you can get it to POST. You also might want to try a CMOS reset.

Good suggestion too Power Off the Hardware, Re-Boot and Reset Bios, but be aware CMOS is ROM and NOT DDR Memory. Edit CMOS for the OS to Boot into Win: But should not be necessary as long as Win has Drivers for your Hardware or your Win Boot will fail.

If your running a TV Card or spare NIC's just pull them and Re-Boot.

The latest MS Drivers may not be compatible with your existing Hardware - Primarily the appropriate VGA Driver commonly referred to as the Chip-Set Driver.

Try hitting F8 and Boot into SafeMode to update your Chip Set Driver - Terrible situation to be in, if that's the only PC you have to work with.

Did all of that guys....I know my way around systems and again, the system will not even post bios or manufacturer logo
I pulled the HDD, RAM and DVD ROM, battery, reset

I was able to restart it 2X since I last posted here though. 1st time, uninstalled the current ATI drivers and disabled fast boot mode (just in case this was the issue)
the 2nd time I chose to put the laptop into sleep mode (to avoid shutting down)

Well, an hour later and it did not resume. Forced a shutdown and it won't boot again.
No bios, no logo, just black screen with a loud fan

I don't get it. My own stupidity. Perfectly working system and had to mess it up by installing Windows 10. Reading on other boards I see different users facing the same black screen, no BIOS, no POST.

I do have other systems in the house, 3 or 4 more. This one is not even that important, I'm just very upset that a stable PC as of 4:00 AM, became crap after this installation.

Tried to report this to MS earlier today and never got a call back from their support team.

I'll try again tomorrow

How in the world could W10 "kill" a laptop.

Sounds like a coincidence to me.

It is. I know you are upset orion23, but an OS did not kill your laptop. If there is only a fan noise, see if the power light is blinking. If there is, that code should tell you/us what is wrong with the laptop.

solution:

pull the hdd.

power on and see BIOS.

if there is no power on and no BIOS screen then you have a hardware issue.

win 10 had nothing to do with it.

Edit: Alive again...after resetting, removing hardware, countless times...couldn't even tell you what "fixed it". However, I'm afraid to let it go to sleep again...

I did all of that guys

If the OS install and stresses hardware beyond its limits it could kill the laptop

If the drivers don't control the hardware, such as a fan on the graphics then overheating can occur and further damages if thermal protection is not controlled / applied

What I know is that the PC was fully functional until earlier this morning

A simple google search will show similar results from other users. Resetting the PC by taking most of its components apart may reset it (it worked 3X now for me) but I have been doing this "reset" cycle all day long and it feel like I'm killing my PC

Never had to do it in the past 3 years....

I've built many systems...I'd like to think I know what I"m doing

I removed the ram, the HDD, battery, wireless card. Swapped HDD's

It ultimately posted, but couldn't tell you why

It then went to sleep but didn't wake up again

And the loop started again...

and that's a hardware problem.

I have seen many a laptop do exactly that.

what brand is the laptop?

No blinking lights when this happens. Just the power and battery (if installed)
The HDD light is completely off...

did you try a hard reset of the laptop?

do you have easy access to the CMOS battery? remove the battery for a few minutes then reconnect it.

On day one MS said 14 million people installed Windows 10...it doesn't strike me as odd that there would be instances where after an install a system might stop working. When you show me it's more than a handful (or some trend), I'll believe it isn't a coincidence.

It kind of sounds like this could be a power issue and if you're on battery when it happens, and the battery is fully charged, then it's internal. Could be a power connector or the motherboard. I'm loving 10 and have no intentions of rolling any of my pc's back to 8.1.

This is not about bashing windows 10, but about reporting my circumstances on the 1st system I chose to upgrade. A laptop with no hardware changes that I intended to upgrade and then fully wipe and install fresh with a new SSD. I was not ready for this

My main server would be a headache to upgrade and I don't really "use" it directly so it can wait

The main PC is do for an upgrade but it is a very tweaked, overclocked machine

My wife's is a dual boot, W7 and W8.1. Super fast with both. No need, but it was next on my list

This is the 1st time I don't upgrade to a new OS on day 1. Always been a fan of MS OS's (even of the bad ones)

I would perform a clean install on the laptop of whatever os you plan to use, however I'd try 10 first.

Laptop was put to sleep overnight. Didn't wake up this morning. What's weird is that not even the fan would spin this time, just the power light and nothing else
Later this afternoon the fan was on. Still trying to get this to turn on again

If you did want to test something, you could restore it to 7 the next time it boots.

But I have a test for you: remove the battery, unplug it, hit the power button. Replace battery and power plug. Does it work?

If it doesn't, alternate battery and power plug only and see if it boots.

Oh, and in an earlier post you mentioned the hdd light not blinking. A POST code on a laptop normally comes through the power light.

No blinking lights. Solid power light and battery when installed.

I just took the entire laptop apart. Replaced the CMOS battery, cleaned the CPU paste and applied new paste while @ it

Assembled it back and nothing. Not even the fan spins anymore

What gives
