Windows 7 to 10

I'm in a situation where a game that isn't working on Win7 seems to install on 8/8.1/10. Wondering whether to upgrade but the thing is that I'm concerned about things that I use a lot like third party applications, things that are written for 7 and still haven't been updated, other pro applications like photo editing, video editing, audio editing (I'm an independent filmmaker) and just the entire world of third party apps and things I've grown used to in an XP/Windows 7 world. There are lots of programs I have that run older emulator games, that modify saves for console games, applications for media viewing and converting, etc.

I do know that I can run 10 fine on my specs. But can anyone tell me if I'm going to find wall after wall of applications that don't run? I assume here on this forum there are people like me who have similar applications on their computers.

For what it's worth, I'm fully invested in the MS universe. I'm on Windows Phone, we have a Windows tablet, Windows laptop. So I know the benefits of Win10, just don't want to find that my fantastic media player software, PSX emulator, audio codec and video conversion software, etc etc don't run anymore.

Edit: Any recommendations on the best way to do a full image of my current Win7 install in case this update is a disaster and I need to go back?

Get your self an External Drive and an Image clone program.

Make an image of your Win 7 Installation and save it in a safe place.

In you decide to go back to Win 7 Clone back to the computer and you will back to Wi7 as it was.

That I done since Wn3.1 with a DOS Boot 1.36 MB Ghost App System Over-Write or my Win OS would be busted and I would not be here.

It's getting difficult.

Chill out. Your posts have nothing to do with what the OP is asking about.

To the OP - I have not found any programs that don't run in Win10 that did in Win7, but I can't guarantee anything. I agree with JackMDS - make a system image, do the upgrade, and if you have trouble just restore your image and you're back to where you were.

Excellent, thank you. Do you recommend any particular one?

My personal preference is Acronis True image. Takes 10 minutes to image, and 10 minutes to restore when needed.

P.S. I am sorry in the process of the Quote I mistakenly deleted part of your Post.

No problem. Will these programs let me restore a Windows 7 image when I'm in Windows 10? How is the one built into Windows itself?

The best approach is to build a Bootable CD, or USB Flash Drive (The program has a provision to do so).

You plug an External Drive Boot form the True Image CD/Flash drive and Image a copy of the whole Win 7 HD to the external Drive (The image file is about 50% of the used space on the original HD}. As an example if you have a 500MB Drive in the computer and it is used to am extend of 300 GB (all content) the external image storage drive should be about 180GB.

If you decide to restore back Win 7 you can boot again from the True Image CD/Flash Drive and restore Win 7.

You can also image Win 10 before the Restore. Thus you would have spare image of both Win and Win 10.

Also remember that you can fully revert to what you had (7 in this case) for up to 30 days after the upgrade. I have also seen people say that a good system restore dated from before the upgrade will also work to get you back to 7.

TBH, I don't know that I would be using the same computer for Gaming and Business, but that is completely your call.

I've had no issues with the built in imaging program in Windows 7, 8, and 10 . I prefer it actually, I find it restores faster than any third party app I've used.

And it gets you back to EXACTLY where you were right? I don't get what it is the other programs offer? More verifying, more error checking, etc, I imagine. And the Windows tool will let you go back to 7 from 10, too?

Dude you have a track record of being a jackass and if you want to leave the op's topic go start your own thread instead of trying to hijack this one.

Some of these are a bit pricey... I know, I know, do you really want a free program to do something as important as backing up an entire computer? I guess my criteria would have to be something that will never be obsolete and if it does become obsolete, something I can easily convert to another image format. I don't want to end up in a situation where some time in the future I end up with an image that could only be read by ONE specific program and that program was just bought by Samsung or something only to be taken out of circulation and made obsolete. Or do these processes all create generic ISOs readable anywhere?

That's exactly why I quit making drive images and started clean installing when I run into trouble. With my program data backed up it's just a matter of reinstalling the software and ending up with a clean registry as a foundation to begin over again upon. As a matter of fact I did it again this morning with my laptop bringing it up on a clean revised 1511 build. Reinstalling my software suites is a snap especially with cloud storage retaining my settings. The biggest thing is to back up your data frequently, as in daily, so you don't lose anything important if the unexpected should happen.

The thing is that the computer works fine right now. Just want to come back to this state if I need to.
How do you back up ONLY your program data?

Most backup software allows you to select the folders to back up and if you've got lots of them the initial management of them can be time consuming. Once you've got it set up then it isn't so much work. One drive will also do this once you set it up with the folders and files you want it to save for you.

Windows 7 has a backup utility that does system images. Make sure to create a restore DVD and have another hard drive to hold the image. The image will not be compressed so expect the image to be big.

I have photo and video editing software and everything worked fine for me. I don't have any software that was written for Windows 10 specifically. I don't think the core in both OS are that much different from each other so there is a good chance that your software will run fine.

Just FYI, OP... Acronis is different in that it would restore your image outside of Windows (although I'm not that familiar with Windows Restore, I don't use it.)

If you have a WD drive in your computer, you can get a free, limited version of Acronis from WD... it works just like the full version, minus a few things that you probably won't miss. In any event, the $20 or so you would pay for Acronis would be well worth it to allow you to back up your system or files going forward.
