Hello

Today when I started my computer, I noticed that all my desktop icons were missing and only text were displayed. When opening start, some icons show and some are just replaced by a black square, the same goes for icons inside My Computer where most is just black squares.

When I try to run the majority of my programs i get a file system error 65535, which makes it impossible for me to do most of my tasks. I have tried to google for solutions, where most seems to get it working by a sfc /scannow. I had to do this in safemode as I can't run the command prompt in Administrator mode as that gives me a file error 65535 as well. The sfc /scannow command confirmed that there were issues, but it were unable to perform any changes so that didn't help me. I have done several chkdsk neither which helped. Some suggested to perform registry changes, but that as well didn't help me and I have as well run ccleaners registry fix which did nothing.

So my last thought were to use a windows installer and run a repair or in last case do a clean install. However, I can't even run the windows setup without receiving a file error 65535 which now leaves me without any idea how to proceed. So any welcome in this case is much appreciated.

Tell me more about your clean install. Boot off DVD or from within Windows? If you were inside Windows when trying to run it, I could see you getting this message.

I have seen malware/virus/rootkits do similar things. You could also try burning Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a CD. Boot your computer off of it and see if it finds your problem.

Lastly, if you can't re-install Windows from the DVD and Kaspersky can't find anything, you may be looking at hard drive failure.

Thanks for the fast response.

My attempt to clean install have been through virtual mounting. I haven't used a CD drive in my builds last couple of times so this is my usual goto method.

I will try to use the kaspersky removal tool. Will report back on results.

I am currently using 3 drives, 1 system SSD and 2 hard drives. It is a problem across all 3 drives, would that still happen if 1 of them were failing?

I have been into the safemode again, and apparently I can run programs there that otherwise gives me an error when running normal windows, is that normal or might it be a clue that there is some virus in play here? I also managed to only install CCleaner while in safemode. So will attempt to install the kaspersky tool.

I have now attempted to run the virus removal tool from kaspersky, but it finds no threats so I suppose this is a windows software issue.

If it gives any additional information, when booting into safemode i get an explorer.exe error that says "unknown hard error".

Elaborate on that please.

OK, one thing you can try would be to disconnect the hard drives and run only the SSD with the OS. Are you still seeing the issue?

If that doesn't work, your sfc results indicate you may need to wipe the drive and re-install Windows.

Have you ever had a blue screen on this installation?
Did you current Windows install come from somewhere else, or was a full install performed with the current hardware?

Thanks all for the fast responses. I am now pretty convinced that this isn't a malware issue, I have run the kaspersky tool which found no threats and I have since day 1 of my install had a AV program installed and frequently updated.

Elaborate on that please.

I have my windows 8 stored as an .iso file. My first install on the system were through USB, reinstalls happen with virtual clonedrive and mounting the .iso file through that.

Okay, I will try your suggestion about only running my SSD.

I have had a few blue screens when overclocking my system, but haven't had any since finalizing it. A important thing I might have left out, is that today when I first booted my PC it did sound like it restarted on it own while still booting, which might be from where this issue started. A crash doing boot.

I did a clean installation of windows last time i upgraded my hardware, did a full format of all my disks and a fresh windows install on the SSD.

If you are overclocking, the first thing you do is to return your system to defaults until you are clear of this.

It sounds more like a drive issue or, a sata cable issue.

Why would it give an error written as a port number?

Edit. After some searching, it does not like a virus problem but a folder structure problem.

This MS page suggest sfc /scannow or restore.

This page has an exe file for repairing.

I have already activated the standard bios profile from my motherboard to make sure none of my tweaks would be the issue.

Yes, all the patches had been installed.

So, I ended up doing a total format on my drives. Seems like several things had fucked. Did a new fresh install from a USB stick and now everything seems to be running smoothly again. Appreciate all you guys help.

Hope that was the last of it. I have seen Windows load fails at just the wrong time to make a problem that big, but they are VERY rare. Thank you for letting us know you are back to normal!
