windows 98?

is there anyway that i can make my old windows 95 computer have windows 98? if so could someone help me do this? thanks.

You _could_ but why would you? They're both just DOS, and i'm not aware of anything 98 can do that 95 can't.

How about linux? It will make the most of an old machine, or maybe NT4 or something if you're uncomfortable with trying unix. What is in the box?

BTW, there is an operating systems forum...

Buy a 98 upgrade CD. Put it in the CD tray. Upgrade. I would agree though that there isn't a whole lot 98 can do that 95 can't and those that it might could are obsolete anyway. Calendar says 2005. 10 year old, or 7/8 year old OS's from Microsoft are simply irrelevant. Older machines are good for barebones linux boxes, linux based firewalls or dedicated Freecell machines.

If you really want to do it, just do it. Not really sure what your asking, unless your just unfamiliar with what an upgrade is.

if you really want this done then take it to your local computer shop and let them do it. better yet sounds like its time for a new machine.

I can't think of a worse suggestion than taking an old machine and paying some A+ tech or even worse, some outfit like Geeksquad, more than the machine is worth to load an OS. If nothing else use the machine as a learning resource. Not like your going to do much damage and if you do, then you've only damaged something that is basically a paperweight anyway, at least in the windows world. Don't take it to a shop to have anything done to it. If you have legacy 95 machine and it is in such a state of repair that you need to have someone look at it, then it is total'd anwyay.

I mean what kind of processor does it have? how much RAM? hard disk?

have you ever installed an operating system before? if the answer to that question is "what's an operating system?" then i wouldn't bother installing anything new on that machine unless you have something specific you want it to do, and you feel like learning a bit about computers first.

it's an Artex or something, never heard of that kind in my life....i pretty sure it has 128 MB....and not sure about the hard disk.

Windows Explorer would tell you the size of the HD.

Download and Run cpuz ( http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-131.zip ), it is small enough to run on a Floppy, it would report the CPU and memory.

As far as my experience goes, functionally Win98 se would run slow to fair with 64MB RAM PII266 and 1.2GB Drive.

If you have 128MB and it is at least PII 300 with 1GB HD, it would run well with Win98se, if the HD is about 2GB it would run slow to fair (depending on the application) with Win2000.
