Windows Defender

The PC that I'm currently on wasn't used for a couple of months until today. I had Microsoft Antispyware installed on it, so when I booted it up today, it informed me that it was no longer supported and it wanted me to install Windows Defender instead. I had planned on installing Windows Defender anyway, so I went ahead and did that without any problems. However, when I went to update Windows Defender, it told me there weren't any updates. I clicked the link to troubleshoot the issue and it brought me to the following page:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105

I followed the directions listed in the Resolution section, but it didn't help me. Whenever I try to update Windows Defender, I still get the same message that there are no updates. Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this problem. Also, I was curious about the following line in the page that I linked to above:

"This problem occurs because after Windows Defender Beta 2 has been reinstalled, it does not automatically obtain new definitions until the next definition update is published on the Windows Update Web site."

Does this mean that the next time an update for Windows Defender is released I'll be able to download them again? If so, should I just wait for a new update and then just download it without worrying about getting the program to update before then? Thanks a lot to anyone who can help me out.

If you set it to update automatically, it will do so when a new set of definitions is posted.

After a few days it is all up to date.

Okay, that's what I thought would happen if I just waited until a new set of definitions were released. I just wanted to make sure I understood the error and that eventually I would be able to have it updated. Thanks for the help.

I installed Windows Defender yesterday, checked for any updates (none), ran it, & it found NOTHING.

It's supposed to catch spywear & other bad things.

I then immediately ran Ad-Aware, which found 4 bad things, where WD had just detected 0.

So, does anybody find Windows Defender to be of any use?

What were the 4 "bad things"? WD is good for people that don't know any better.
