Windows Explorer keep generating error/crashing

windows xp home edition (dell) with all updates
p4-1.8
512mb
40gb hd
inspiron 8200 laptop

installed c&c generals...after a reboot...explorer would keep generating errors and crashing. I could navigate my harddrive with "my computer"...but anytime i change to folder view, explorer crashes.
samething goes for internet explorer. I have tried the following but everytime explorer.exe would crash

safe mode
system restore
last know good configuration
virus scan
upgrading to windows xp pro
expanding a new explorer.exe from windows xp cd

i could post the technical data that windows generate in its error report if anyone is interested.
i would welcome any possible fix to this problem. right now, i am reduced to launching applications from the task manager or prompt....i am posting with netscape right now.

You may have a software conflict. Try killing all background processes (via Control/Alt/Delete) that are not essential to running your system. If that fixes the problem you can then go to work trying to id exactly which process is the problem.

If you don't know which you can kill you can use freeware EndItAll to help you along.

Have you tried uninstalling C&C yet? What about reapplying SP1?

I've seen this before but 90% of the time it's because of some sh!t 3rd party plug-in for explorer like hotbar. Sometime when you uninstall them they leave behind registry entries referencing DLLs that have been removed. Hence Explorer crashes because it can't find the DLL.

I don't understand how System Restore did not fix this. It should have reverted it back to a good configuration. Are you sure you picked a point back far enough?

This will happen a lot when you upgrade ME to XP. All the ME bugs get sucked right into your upgrade of XP. Try running adaware also, spyware can cause this, as well as many other things..
