Windows Will Not Boot

My girlfriends computer is having a hard time booting up. I could always do a format and reinstall but she doesnt want to lose everything naturally. See the problem is when windows boots up it goes through the booting phase and at the end when windows is done loading the screen goes black then she gets a BSOD real quick and her computer restarts. She tried running it in safe mode but after all the files in safe mode are loaded it just freezes and sits there. Whats the best way to fix the windows without reinstalling it? I was thinking maybe getting a restore point in system restore but I dont know the ms dos command prompt for it. Some help would be good! Thanks!

u can try 2 things

if she had system recovery on, Keep on pressing F8 on boot and select System restore point, if it does not say it there its now on..

so


Reinstall windows XP, but dont format.

Jack - completely correct.

My gf whinges at me when I take the time to back up stuff to CD's, but last week managed to delete the whole folder of photos...... whilst running p2p. So it wasn't really worth doing a data recovery.
Should have seen the look on her face when I told her.

Should have seen the look on her face when I told her that I had a backup that was a month old. That was a little better.

its a hp laptop...i think an athlon xp 2400 mobile and 256 megs of whatever kind of ram they use with hp and psu i have no idea..

Did you try a restore point like sttigirius suggested?

Also, as it is a laptop, does this happen on battery and AC power?

Are all peripherals disconnected?
Can you get into the BIOS to disable onboard stuff - DONT disable onboard graphics.
You are running XP aren't you? - Don't seem to be giving us much info.
Is it on a need to know basis? haha

boot to an xp cd an go into recovery console, run chkdsk /r... that can fix several blue screens, worth a shot
