Windows XP and 98SE Networking

Hi all,
I have a newly XPed (proffesional) machine hooked up to a hub. This hub connects to my other, 98, machine, as well as the cable modem. Both computers have different IPs from Comcast. How do I get the network running again? On 98 it was simple: unplug the cable modem, and you could transfer files. With XP, I can see the 98 machine, but not access it. 98 doesn't even see XP. I've read quite a few guides, but they don't address this. Any ideas? Thanks!

ok sorta new to networking, but having a simliar set up i will start the replying.

(you'll probably get more *looks at the number of responses* you willl get more responses in the networking topic)

first aim at getting the network working before ya throw in the cable modem and ICS.

from here i would give them both an IP from reserved IP address's out there (X million of em)
and make sure the subnet mask is the same.

sometimes i have been throw because for some strange reason one has 255.255.0.0 and the other 255.255.255.0

with looking quickly i thought they were the same.
and of course the name of network.
from there make sure sharing is configured for both
XP, right click a HDD and hit properties, and go to the sharing tab , and set they up
for Win98 make sure the file sharing protocol is installed, and enabled!

this SHOULD get the network part working (should that is )

now with ya internet connection i am not sure how you want it configured.
but i'll say this....

connect the cable modem up and decide which one will control the connection, the host.

get that set up, and on the other rig assign the internet gateway IP as that one of the host.

also becare full if your ISP is using PPPoE protocol as you will need to adjust ya MTU value

sorry for stating the obvious, but bit the imit info provided i thought i was safest.

davegb is right, first get your network running then connect to the cable modem.

To get the network running:
1) Run the XP networking wizard on the XP machine (you probubly already have and don't have to change anything).
2) Then take the XP disk, put it in the Win '98 machine and run the XP networking wizard on the 98 machine.

See if file transfers work now.

What I found is microsoft hasn't set it up so that you can easily just add and XP machine to an older network. To do this you have to run the XP networking wizard (from the CD) on all the older machines, effectively upgrading their network features.

ahh yes forgot all about the networkling off CD trick from the XP CD

i have XP on both here so have never actually done it

but what i suggested, that would work ?? (although longer and harder)

i dont htink this guy is getting these messages anyway
