Windows Xp install problem

Here's the deal. I got a new custom pc built, a friend of mine who knows alooott about computer and computer code set it up and checked if everything was proper for me. All the parts work fine. He formatted the hard drive for me. He gave me a brand new windows xp pro to me and was getting ready to install it, but he had to go (the menu was up, so nothing wrong with the cd). We turned the pc off and i would just install xp when i got home. No parts were moved or re-arranged. I get home, turn it on, and goto boot from the cd. It goes to a screen that says "scanning for system hardware" or something to that degree, but it stops, and it doesn't ever go anywhere. I let it boot normally without hitting a key to boot from cd and it just sits there with a black screen. I know it's something small that i just need to do, but i went to a local computer shop and the guy told me 55$ bare minimum price. Any advice? Thanks.

It can sit there with the hour glass for ages - might want to leave it for a couple of hours, and make sure you are doing something - be busy , so you don't sit and stare at it.

Another thing you might want to do, is, if there is a progress bar, place the mouse cursor where the bar has got upto.
Leave it alone for a few hours if you have something better to do.

Then get back to us if still no joy.
I've spent maybe upto 1.5 hours on an installation while it waited to do stuff.

Well, the thing is is that it's a straight black screen and at the top in white font, it says, scanning for hardware properties or whatever, and the ...'s aren't mvoing or anything, there isn't even a mouse cursor. I left it on for about 1 hour and 15 minutes yesterday while i palyed halo but nothing came up. When it first comes up, i can hear my pc running, after about 3 minutes it slows down abit. after 6 minutes it hardly sounds like it's running. I'll try it one more time, let it sit for about 3 hours and post my results

1. Have you checked to insure that all of the cables are seated and plugged in properly?

2. Have you tried to clear the CMOS and reboot?

3. How is the hard drive connected to the motherboard, meaning is it a slave or a master?

4. You could always try putting the hard drive on an IDE channel by itself as a master.

I had a problem very similar to this once where the computer would sit forever trying to detect the drives at POST.

I sound crazy, but how I got around it was to press the eject button on the CD Drive. After the tray opened the computer would detect the drives and boot.

Well, i got my computer to work fine. I pulled my mouse outta the back USB port when turning on and then plugged back in when it was on. Which leads to my next problem. The mouse problem obviously, why does it not load up with mouse in UBS. And when it does, windows loads reaalllyy slow. Any suggestions?

Use a USB - PS2 hardwired connector. Very cheap.
