and if I have preinstalled, legal copy from Dell, why i have to activate it all the time I change my hardware?
I do it pretty often.
i'm sure it will be cracked on the release day.

It is pretty stupid that you have to re-register when you change hardware isn't it? But you have the thousands of people using pirated version with corporate keys to thank for that.

MS will loose more when people will switch to OS which is not that "vendor dependable".
More Linux users!?!

Sure it's an attempt to stop piracy but who is it really hurting? Legit and law abiding users. Pirates will still crack it and when the service pack comes out, they'll have a keygen to get around whatever MS has in store for them.

Anti-piracy measures only seem to hurt the legal users and help no one.

Quit whining... It isn't all that bad. I've called MS twice. Give em an excuse for why you have to activate AGAIN... read them the number, type in their response, and continue using XP.

edit: and the patch must have the invalid keys in it somewhere... if you change them, how would it determine authenticity?

Look, if you are a "legitimate" user, you will have no problem. It's a short call if you are just making some significant changes to your hardware. If it is a minor change, you don't have to do squat. If you have to place a 3-5 minute phone call from time to time because you make major changes to your hardware; what's the beef? If it helps to keep the cost down, why not? Yeah, nobody knows if it "really" will keep costs down but PIRACEY IS A PROBLEM. Deal with it! Are you saying that you are really "inconvenienced" by having to make a short phone call? Many times, if you have an internet connection and have only made minor changes, it will only take seconds for the "activation" process to happen; no phone calls, nothing. If you are truely a "legit" user, you will also have no trouble with the Service Pack. Personally, I have no worries at all!

MS' attempt to weaken the piracy community was not much successful (at least this time around) as there are already ways to circumvent the additional protection embedded in the upcoming SP1 package. However, I don't think MS should stop its efforts of fighting against piracy as the act of piracy not only hurt MS but also thousands of software vendors (like so many of my friends) and their customers. By the way, if you think XP is way overpriced, there are perfectly legal ways to get the legit copies at a discounted price.

I think Microsoft accomplished what they set out to do. Of course they knew that some tech savy people would find ways to circumvent the protection. They were after the casual copiers - Bob buys a copy and then puts it on his sons computer, his neighbor, his parents, etc. These are the people that probably would purchase a legal copy if they were forced to but just don't because Bob has one they can 'use'. They know that the real 'pirates' would never buy it anyway, activation or not, regardless of the price.

Anyway, this thread is redundant. There is one in OT with over 150 posts that has discussed all this.

Amen to that. Well said even as redundant in many posts as you said.

Casual Copying is what Microsoft is targeting. Enough said.

So where is the hack then?

To continue the discussion, I bought WinXP Pro the day it came out. At that time I was obsessed with formatting/performance or something because I had to call Microsoft every couple weeks to explain why I was formatting so much. It wasn't a big deal, 5 minute phone call. I just got tired of it. So I downloaded the corporate edition.

I rarely do now and will probably install my retail version the next time around. Until then, how do I install SP1 with corporate edition?

I have an education copy of XP which I bought legal through my university so I don't know exactly...but formatting and re-installing XP on the same computer constitutes a change? You sound a little shady...you downloaded the corporate edition which is illegal and not for you because you justify it with the fact you own the retail version? Personally I don't care what you pirate but don't try to be a smartie and tell some tall tale to get someone to help you with something you "pirated".

I have over 80GB of "pirated" games/apps/movies retailing over 50k easy. I could care less what you or anyone else thinks about that. I wasn't trying to be a "smartie" or make excuses. It was a new system with a new operating system. I was testing different drivers, raid stripes/clusters, and tweaks. I felt it was necessary at the time to format, and I thought it was BS that I had to activate it every time. So I downloaded corporate edition. Nowadays I focus most of my extra time on my project/classic car. So it's true, I will be installing the retail version again because it will probably be the last time I format in a long time.

I wasn't REALLY expecting anyone to tell me how to hack it. I'm SURE its ILLEGAL to even talk about it here. After a long weekend, I was feeling to lazy to find out myself.

According to what I've read the only "protection" SP1 adds over straight WinXP is the blocking of 2 well known corporate keys. Hence if you use the keygen floating around the web then WinXP should work if you install SP1 with a new key.

What's with this formatting all the time? For God's sake, get your legal version set up, activated, then make an image you can go back to if you screw something up. Some of you guys really like formatting?

plus you can also integrate service pack in to WINXP cd, so next time you reinstall SP1 will be included, details are on the same site.

I changed my mind. Im all about pirating software. I hate Microsoft, but I really want them to control everything in the x86 world. It will make everything easier. When there isnt a computer big and powerful enough to hold a database full of information for 15 different companies because all we have left is some crappy desktop and small server hardware running a crakced and bloated gui based OS my job will be much easier.

Pirate Windows, make Microsoft stronger. Pirate Windows software, make Microsoft stronger.

If Microsoft gets some money (Im not sure why they dont have the money to do this since they dont pay taxes, and why should they? Benefits for small corporations and whatnot) they may make an OS that doesnt have to reformatted every 2 weeks because children download some movies and want a RAID 0 array and insist on downloading viruses off of KaZaA (or however its capitalized today), but they never bother to pirate antivus software (are these people idiots or what?)!

So, pirate Windows so Microsoft gets the money to create a stable and secure solution for your thievery.

On dozens of systems. But on 3 of my home machines: #1 isnt connected to the net so root isnt all that important, #2 doesnt have root enabled (Mac OS X), and #3 I forgot the root password on so I cant login or su to root.
