Windows XP x64 missing ntoskrnl

Hey guys,

I installed XP Pro x64 today on another partition. All went well i got all my drivers and all, i didnt use it much just installed a few drivers, i went back into my x32 xp pro and then later on when i went to go back into x64 it wouldn't boot giving me this error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
please re-install a copy of the above file.


Got any ideas what could of caused this? and also can anyone link me or send me a copy of there original x64 ntoskrnl.exe please. Very Much Appreciated.

it is very very unlikely that you would be able to fix this with the file you would get, it is a crucial part of the OS and imho it's still there, and it cannot be read. I think you are in for a reformat.

I've experienced that problem a few years ago. What I did is make another CD copy and reinstall the OS. My guess was that my previous copy degraded and the files that were copied to the harddrive was corrupted. CDR disks sucks.

I would also try manually drag and drop the file from the CD to the mentioned harddisk directory.

I have the same problem with my system. Whats funny is that if you set the Optical Drive as the boot drive and leave the x64 installation CD in the drive you can get into Windows XP x64. If you boot from any other drive or take out the CD no luck and you get the ntoskrnl.exe error, which I believe means it can't find the harddrive. It appears to happen when you have more than one SATA harddrive, no raid, and two operating systems.

I did a search on Planetamd64.com and others are reporting this same problem. I hope someone will come up with a fix soon. The only fix reported there was to use an IDE drive to install x64. Others say there is no problem with two drive in RAIDO split into two partitions.

For now you can set the to boot from CD rom and leave the x64 disk in it. After you get load it everthing seems fine
