I'll try to make this quick. I am tired of pop-up ads like most people and thought if I started running my old free version of zonealarm 2.6 I could filter out some of them. I have a DSL connection through Bellsouth. After installing my DSL connected but when trying to launch IE it says "cannot find server." I rebooted and got the same message. So I uninstalled zonealarm and it got worse. Let me add this, just prior to doing all this I was able to get into IE. Now, still getting "cannot find server" I went to ;start, run, and typed in command. From there I typed in; ping (space) bellsouth.net
The message I got said, this is not a quote, ( could not access windows socket interface, error code 0). My questions, Do
I have a fatel problem with Windows98? A Bellsouth tech said it looks like the uninstall of zonealarm took out some stuff from the registery that it shouldn't have. I have tried to contact zonealarm with no luck. I had been thinking of upgrading to XP Home. If I do this do you think it will solve my problem?

You could try blowing out your network and starting from scratch

Right click on network neighborhood, left click on properties

delete installed component, reboot and re-add them

XP home should solve that

try Mozilla browser, if stops pop ups

I use Zone Alarm ver. 2.6.362, and I have had no problems with it. I can see where you might run into problems if you installed you DSL without turning it off. When you install any program or hardware, it's always a good idea to turn off Zone Alarm and any other running program.

Once your DSL is installed, and you reboot, ZA may pop up to ask if you want to allow the program access to the web or some port on your machine. That's where you set the permissions in ZA. You may also have to uninstall and re-install your DSL setup.

WARNING![/b] DO NOT try Zone Alarm ver. 3.xx. I have seen far too many trouble reports about any of the newer versions, and the uninstall program fails and gives you missing dll error messages. The only reason I got out of it cleanly was because I had Ghosted my drive just before I tried it so I could easily get back to where I was.

I don't think any free version of ZoneAlarm gets rid of PopUps - they used to offer a discount on a popup blocker along with the Pro version. I am currently using Sygate Personal Edition for my free firewall, but also like ZoneAlarm of which a new version was recently posted. I also hear that Outpost is equally good.
. I also use Mozilla (actually Nestcape v.7.2 which is Moz based) which now includes some (optional) popup blocking (not activated by default).

Installing ZoneAlarm is one of the most effective ways I've found to screw up a computer. IMHO ZoneAlarm is about the worst program in existance. If you need a firewall there are lots of better free programs - like Tiny Personal Firewall. -sorry about the rant, i feel better now- If you want a popup blocker, then get a popup blocker. I use POW from analogX (free)

neo4s....I've used all the free versions of ZoneAlarm for years on W98 and WXP, without the slightest trace of a problem. It works great and does exactly what it is supposed to do.
