Windows98se wont restart

For some reason, I can't reboot my computer anymore.

When I go to Start->Shutdown->Restart, it just goes to the "Windows is shutting down" screen and just hangs there. So I have to manully reboot the machine.

Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

Maybe one of my startup files is messed up.

I have also noticed that it is taking like 20 seconds longer when I boot up my machine. Usually my intellimouse optical would go off and then back on once, but now it does it twice for some reason which adds about 10 seconds before it goes into windows.

A couple of things I would try.

Have you installed all the updates for win98 from microsoft? I seem to remember win98 having a shutdown issue on some systems and microsoft made an update to fix it.

You could also try going to start/programs/accesories/system tools, then click on tools then on file checker. Run that and see if you have any corrupt files. It will give you an option to repair them if you do.

Last. You could always just try reinstalling win98 overtop of itself and see if that fixes the problem.

If you have the computer sharing drives on a network, that tends to cause shutdown problems, in my experience. Otherwise, try the update, and if you still have problems, defrag your drives and uninstall all of the programs that you don't need. It could be a program that's hanging when you try to shut it down.

If I reinstall Win98, will I lose all my files? I mean like registry tweaks, tweaks, etc?
