I was wondering does anyone know how I might be able to retrieve the Administrator password on a windows2000 machine.

The install is screwed up because I replaced the mobo on the box so it won't boot. I'm trying to access the recovery console but it wants me to log in as Administrator, I seem to have forgotten the password. Anyone know any sneaky ways to obtain this ?

you cant get the passwd, but you can reset it. you need a bootdisk that has ntfs support (mmmm...linux maybe?) or get something like winternals locksmith / ntfs4dos ... just google it ...

yea i have this Windows XP 6in1 disc that i got off the net, it has a linux bootloader that gives me all sorts of options from a menu.

One of them is to boot win98 with or without ntfs support

I tried booting with ntfs support but it didn't work, C: drive was non-existant. The program that was used was NTFS Pro, I'm not sure why this didn't work, but it gave me an exception everytime i tried to run it.

btw, can anyone point me to a boot disk or CD that will boot with ntfs support?

And once I get that done, how would I go about resetting the password ?

don't sweat it

its generally forwned upon to ask questions without using the forum search since so many of them have been answered over and over....questions that relate to circumventing security are also prime material for flames. just something to keep in mind

NTFS Pro is a little tough to setup. Keep in mind that that version most likely is the trial version which doesn't allow you to write to the drive, which you will need to replace the sam file.

tough to set up? you make a boot floppy and install the dos driver through the autoexec.bat file....thats all there is to it.

okay i made a linux floppy that boots but it won't mount the drive system
says Kernel panic: can't mount root fs at 03:01

so I'm guessing this is because it can't read the ntfs partition

so how do i setup this ntfspro thing?
I thought I didn't need to do that with linux ?

I got it working actually
turns out the administrator account was disabled because the computer had been upgraded to windows2000 from win98, I guess Microsoft automatically locks/disables the admin account when you upgrade from 9x to nt for secuirty reasons.
But with this handy-dandy linux boot cd i found i was able to re-enable the administrator account and then reset the password
yay!
