WinXP and 768Meg RAM??

Its there a performance gain by adding this much ram in a WinXP pro box? I'd like to go ahead and max out the sdram in my system.

Really, though, it depends on how you're using your computer. If you've got a terabyte database being hit by hundreds of simultaneous users, yeah, the RAM will help.

If you're using this machine to write school papers and gib your friends, then depending on how much you've got now, adding RAM will bring a negligible performance boost.

Depends on what you do, if your into heavy multitasking, ie photoshop, MP3, DIVX, and a game all at once you may notice a difference. I have 512MB in my system and I have never had under 100MB free

For anything except heavy duty apps like Photoshop, 3DS Max or similar, etc, I'd say you'll never even max out 512 MB.

In fact, for 90+ percent of the users out there, I dont see a point in going above 256 MB.

I have 768 under XP, but rarely use more than 1/3 of it. Guess I was just planning ahead and RAM isn't too expensive right now.

I know one thing - my HDD's don't spin a whole lot anymore.

some xp tweeks suggest that much ram you can turn off virtual memory. anybody trying that ?

The only time I've ever used more than about 200Mb of RAM is when I'm doing some heavy-duty Photoshopping or 3D studio. I've seen almost 800Mb a few times. I run 1 gig of RAM, with a 512Mb pagefile. I'm too chicken to try running w/o a pagefile!

I'm running XP without a pagefile and 768 megs of ram... It works just fine for me and seems to speed things up nicely

to get noticeable proformnce boost out of adding addition ram, use a portion of ram as a ramdisk. I have win xppro with 768 mb of ram which I use 150mb for a ramdrive. Using ramdrive for any disk intensive task, speeds up the process noticeably. When I'm editing .wav files in Cool Edit Pro editing takes seconds, I add changes of the fly without wearing out my harddrive. I run my server off a ramdrive and file transfers dont get bogged down by the mechanics of harddrives. Might as well take advantage of that extra ram.
