How do you set a PC to go back to the log on screen when the PC is inactive?

No *easy* way, but you can press WINDOWS+L if you are in fast user switching mode, or find a more complex way to get it to do it for you. Other way would be to set 'On resume, password protect' on a screensaver for similar effect, but that will give you something like the Win2k logon screen : p

Are you sure?

On my brother's PC with WinXP Home, when the PC is inactive for a few minutes, the default WinXP screen saver comes on. When you move the mouse or touch the keyboard you are at the log on screen.

I want to set my PC up this way so my girlfriend stops installing AOL and other nightmares on my desktop.

Under screensaver properties, select 'password protect'. That's all it is.

yes, but that would defeat the purpose of having a login screen (i would imagine)

When I leave my apartment, I just right click on the desktop, go to properties, and enable my screensaver to come on after one minute (password protected) With Windows 2000 and XP, your girlfriend won't be able to get in (unless she's 1337, which I am not)

Or you could disable fast user-switching in the control panel...then when you press alt-ctrl-del there will be a button that allows you to lock-workstation, you will then have to input your password to be able to use the computer again

I am not worried about a password, I just want her to use her profile and me to use mine.

SIMPLE SOLUTION:

<control panel> <display> <screen saver>

check box: on refresh return to welcome screen

Thew option changes names depending on whether you are using XP with fast user switching/welcome screen or not. If you are using 2000 or XP without the welcome screen, the option is labelled password protect, otherwise it says "On resume, display Welcome screen." That's the option you need to do what you want to do.

This assumes you can trust the person not to use your account anyway if you don't have a password set for your account. If you can, then that's all you need. for any real security, though, the administrator really needs to have a password set.

Odd.. I'm using XP Pro, and it says 'Password Protect', and I use the Welcome screen.... interesting.
