WinXP "loses" Creative PCI 128

In order to properly use XMpeg I need audio on a system. The system is an Athlon 1GHz on a KT7A motherboard, video is a Matrox Millennium (don't need anything really good, it's just a server) and a Netgear FA311 NIC, WinXP for OS. I originally put it together with no sound, but when I decided to rip my DVD's (for my own use, yes) I found I needed to have audio support to do it properly, so I installed a Creative PCI 128.

WinXP detected it fine and loaded the drivers for everything. However I noticed that the volume control wasn't showing up onthe taskbar. Found that it wasn't checked in the Sound properties (you'd think that'd be the default), so I checked it, but it still didn't show up. So I logged out and back on, and it didn't show up. So I looked again, and now the Sounds and Audio Devices applet shows no Audio devices installed. Verified in Device Manager that it's installed and working properly.

So I delete it and reboot. XP detects it and reinstalls drivers, and now I can make the volume icon appear by checking the option in the Audio applet. But as soon as I log out or reboot, when I get back in the Audio applet shows no Audio devices. So I downloaded the newest drivers for it from Creative's site (dated 01/03/02). Same issue. Anytime I log out or restart, Device Manager shows everything is fine, but Audio properties says there's no audio device present. The only way to fix it is to remove it from device manager and restart so it gets redetected (though maybe just a "scan for new hardware" would do it).

I've changed the PCI slot the card is in, I've moved the network card around as well. I didn't bother with the video card, because no matter what I do (including setting the IRQ's for each slot in the BIOS) XP just assigns them all the same IRQ (yeah yeah, XP uses virtual IRQ's, but dammit when I set the IRQ in the BIOS it ought to honor it).

So is this just not going to work, or is it just a bug with this card and XP? (Not surprising of course if it is just a compatibility issue.) I haven't had a chance to try this card in another machine I'm putting together to see if it has the same problem.
