Saw it posted on usenet yesterday. Does that mean it's been released to the beta testers? Anybody using it yet?

I'm going to play with sp1 beta on various combinations of XP Corp using the "default" key , as well as alternate keys. I'm also going to run sp1 on a Corp that has had it's original CD-key replaced. I'll report back after I play around.

I'll be doing all this thanks to Drive Image. What a great program! No matter how much something gets messed up I just re-image and I'm ready to go.

Preliminary report:

1)Ran sp1 installer on "Devils Own" that was originally installed using a new key (not the blacklisted key) from the XP_all_suite_keygen. Installed fine and was able to go to Windows Update afterwards and d/l some updates. sp1 broke my StyleXP, had to reinstall the hacked "uxtheme.dll" file to get it to work again.

2)Ran the sp1 installer on a "MSDN" version that was installed using the blacklisted serial number (FCKGW..). Appeared to go OK, asked for reboot at end of install. Upon reboot, just at logon, got an error about "WPA...something or other". Would not boot to desktop. Apparently isn't going to work with this serial number.

More later.....

More:

Re-imaged to the MSDN with blacklisted key. Changed the key and tried sp1 beta again. Worked fine this time.

Taken from http://www.windowsxp.nu/
Don't do this unless you have a valid key. It will render your OS unbootable!!!!!!!!!

Follow these instructions:

0. Run a system resore to create a new checkpoint in case you need it.
1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WPAEvents, on the right double click on "oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate windows.
2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen and go to the second option which is activate by phone.
3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type in the new product key (your Corporate one only).
3a. If it brings you back to the prior screen after entering the new key click remind me later and then reboot.
4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2 for the second time to verify your activation , you should see "windows is already activated".
4.1 Now install SP1
5. If you have done this wrong or without a valid key you will not be able to boot. hit F8 and select last known good configuration

Yes, what Toonces311 said is the way to change your CD-key if you've originally installed your OS using the "blacklisted" key. Seems like me and Blacktalon were in a parallel universe yesterday.

I've done this several times already and it works great. I've been 100% succesful installing sp1 on various Corp and MSDN versions of XP.

Give me a free afternoon, a handful of beta apps and Drive Image and Ralf is a happy boy!

I just want to make sure I got this right. You can use a keygen to put a new Key into the "Devils Own" (instead of the blacklisted key), and fool SP1?

So effectively this Keygen eliminates MS from being able to stop pirates using the ever popular "Devils Own" install?

Yes, exactly correct, at least for the beta sp1. Maybe M$'ll figure out something new for the final release. Plus, someone will probably find a way to hack the actual sp1 installer so that it will work with any key/version.

How does that keygen work? Does it just put out stolen keys, or is it actually generating a key that follows the code MS used to create the keys?

Damn, the things we can do with computers...

It generates real M$ keys, they are not stolen.

Yes talking about the Keygen here is most likely a way to get this thread locked. However, it is good to know that it (so far) defeats the SP1 shutdown.

Where do you get a Keygen for this purpose?

I have one legit copy of XP-Pro and one "corp" version. Would changing the product key to that of the legit copy via the earlier mentioned method work?

Opps, sorry about that <sheepish grin>

I guess my question should then be addressed to Blacktalon . . . Should I be surfing the Internet and accidentally happen upon a site that had a downloadable file called something like XP_all_suite_keygen, what would the address of this site be???

SwampsterFL-

Talking about the possibility of a Keygen being out there is likely to get this thread locked.

Requesting the address of a place to find the keygen, or if such a place were posted, will get this thread locked. Additionally, it will likely get any member involved (i.e. you and who ever posts what ever the location might be) banned or suspended.

You additional problem is that Microsoft is shutting down website that have this key because it promotes piracy and is illegal.

I would recommend you do what every college student does to find illegal copies or software, get a program that does p2p sharing like bearshare or kazaa and see if somebody there has it and will share it with you.
