Wired or wireless?

Hi guys I am new here. I would like would like to ask the same question which probably has been asked a million times!

Any differance with wired and wireless? I am talking in terms of the speed upload, download and consistency. I am currently wired to my adsl modem with just a normal 10/100 Linksys network adapter. The only big differance which obviously you can roam round the house.

I do not intend to share with anybody but I do not mind getting a 4 port access point like Linksys or Netgear for future usage when I need money desparately!

Thought about the new 54mbps but is it worth the money? Well I basically surf the net but seldom download large files for music or movies.

Anyway, some feedback from you all guys and gals will be great! Thank you in advance!

It depends how far you want to move from the router... The further you get away, the slower it gets. I have 802.11b and it gets rather slow when I'm downstairs and the router is upstairs. Also I get like a max of 200kb/s or something.

If you are just using it for downloading off DSL, it shouldn't be a problem, but I use LAN file sharing and intranet services, so it really affects the speed going from 100mbit to 1mbit or 11mbit (depending on the location of where I am in the house)

You're on ADSL, so your speed is almost certainly less than 2 mbps. 802.11b would be fine for you (11 mbps). 54 mbps is a waste unless you plan to transfer stuff between computers on your local network.

For residential internet access, there is basically no difference between wired and wireless except that wireless is slightly harder to set up.

It is not like they are mutually exclusive. You can get a wireless router. Most of the time I wander around with my wireless laptop, but when speed is of the essense I plug the laptop into my wired network.

Wireless will cost a little more, and you have to be more careful of security issues.

Do you have one machine or many? If only one, what exactly is it you want to achieve? Even with only one machine, a router can enhance security. But, it would help to know what your current setup and goals are.

two reasons to get wirelwss.
1. if you can't run a cable "easily".
2. You want to wander around with your notebook.

Otherwise I recommend wired....reliability and security.

I have a wireless router, but all the primary machines are wired to it. I had a laptop that I use the wireless for, and I also have a couple of USB wireless NIC's that I use for customer testing when their machine doesn't have a LAN card. I'd do the wired thing if possible, much faster and more reliable.

Want slow performance, spott peformance and a whole lot of guess work but you can walk around the kitchen? Go wireless.

If performance matters at all then you do wired.

Guys thanks for the feedback! I think i will stick to my wired at the moment and burn my money on some other products. Looks like wired product somehow is more reliable and stable lookin at some of your feedbacks. Not saying wireless is lousy but somehow when u want to connect something a wired thingy is more reliable.

I realise after i found that i used to have a wireless keyboard and mouse. It seems that when i played UT2003 or any games similiar to that, the mouse and the keyboard will give me s**t. When i touch any keys on the board then trying to move my mouse, it takes about 1 sec to 2 sec before it starts to move again. So wireless is ok sometimes.
