Looking at the havahart 400ft. wireless fence. I have a great dane and am wanting to give him lots of room but not too much(he loves the neighbors trash down the road).

Any one had any experience with them? Reviews seem great albeit it wasn't cheap.

Is 100X100 big enough for a GD?

Had one several years ago from pet smart(not sure what brand). Worked for the 25lb spaniel. Knocked the crap out of me after I set it up. Forgot I had the shocker in my hand and got too close.

We had one for our dogs before they passed (I don't think it was the same brand) and it worked very well.

The training is pretty critical and from what I understand only the most stubborn/stupid dogs really don't get it, as long as the directions are followed.

Training takes a few weeks, if I recall. You line the perimeter with little flags, then walk it with the dog a few times a day. When the collar gets close to the perimeter, it'll give a barely audible chirp (dogs hear it just fine but people have to really listen) before shocking. So you walk the dog up, listen for the chirp, then scold the flags.

Over time, you gradually remove flags until they're all gone.

We had one for many years, and it worked great. Training is crucial. How much time you spend training the dog highly determines how successful the system works. Our dog picked up on it pretty well, but then we sold the house to someone... they didn't spend much training time with their dog, and they had bad results.

Basically, the shock collar isn't painful enough to deter the dog. It's really meant to just be a reminder to the dog to reinforce their training.

Also, our dog would test the fence. If she found that it was down (due to power outage or whatever), she would cross it.

Yep. I set one up last spring. I followed the training recommended and have not had any problems. My fence was down for a couple of weeks and I didn't notice it because my dog never tried to cross the boundry

the training guide tells you how to set up entry/exit points from the yard. your dog will learn them

The guide on ours was very helpful about this.

I would recommend you rent or buy a small trencher though. I started doing it without one but my neighbor came over and let me borrow his. It made the job so much easier

Not a fan of the wireless systems. Their range keeps changing due to interference.

The wired fences aren't that hard to install (you essentially bury a copper cable loop around your house 3-5" underground) and work pretty well.

I agree but am going to at least give it a try. Lots of neg reviews but a lot of pos reviews too. I'd rather not dig several hundred feet of wire unless I have to

FYI, this may not matter in your situation, but I have a buddy with a german shephard who knows he can make it through the fence.. It takes him about 3-4 seconds of lurching and twitching before he gets far enough to where it doesn't shock him.

Friend had something like that, it worked until the dog figured out if he kept running the pain would stop. Kind of had the opposite effect once it figured it out. :\

We had a wired one for our dogs growing up. Over 5 acres. Worked great, though our Border Collie was often too smart for her own good. She would sit at the edge with the collar beeping for hours. Eventually the battery would die and she would get out. Had to turn off the beeping function eventually. And she would still test it periodically. Like a damn raptor!

had a shepherd with a wireless fence and trained him with it pretty extensively. he only went over it one time, and that was chasing a dog who wandered in to our yard. that to me is the biggest problem with wireless fences. you can train your dog to stay in, but not other people/dogs/animals to stay out. other than that one time, he never even tried to cross it.

You don't have to dig. You use a lawn edger (powered ones work best) and make a tiny trench, put the wire in, then cover it with topsoil.. I used one and had a 2/3 acre lot covered in an hour or two.

He didn't have a big enough collar if that happens.

Well, I'm honestly worried the first time he gets shocked that he freaks the hell out. He's such a big pussy it's unreal. love the guy. i think once he gets shocked a few times and figures out how things work he will be fine.

reason i ordered it was because he loves trash and i'm tired of picking up my neighbor's trash and he wondered off a week or so ago and came back with some gnarly bumps on his face. i thought he got in a fight and were beginning to scab over. i took him into the vet($212) and got him some meds. seems to be improving but it scared the hell out of me.

pics(week ago, 1st day w/ meds, 2nd day 2 w/ meds, and a misc.):

I've used the wired version for years. Mine is there to stop my dogs from escaping my 4ft chain link fence though. I just ran the wire through the fence. No way mine would work without the chain link fence there too. Too many idiots here that let their dogs run around loose to temp my dogs into escaping.

I've known a few people whose success was limited by stray cats wandering onto their property with enough frequency that the dogs figured out that in a mad dash for the cat, they could cross the line with only a brief shock. One of the guys in my old neighborhood was convinced that the shocks made his dog hate cats even more. BIG dog; around 180 pounds; I don't think the shock really bothered him that much.

Awww cute pup.. You might want to mark the wire line with red tape or something so he understands there's a definite point where he gets zapped. I bet you could slowly take the tape away and he'd still hang on to it

my dane is 135 as of monday. probably has another 25 in him. i think the first time he gets hit he's probably going to think that's the worst thing that's ever happened to him in his life. he's that big of a puss.

I had the wired one for my dog. The box eventually got hit by lightning and it was probably a year before we/dog knew. But since he had been used to it for several years he just hangs around the house now.

I rented a trencher and had the wire buried in a day. Not too much to it, but like others said, it's all about training.

You're going to want to get the large collar. I have a 90lb husky/german shepherd mix and had to get the collar with a 9v battery for him to even feel it. I had it at the half power setting and he regretted the first time he tried to test it.
