I just saw this on newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127158

It's advertising gigabit ethernet ports and 108Mbps total "Data Rate". And it's nearly $75 more than the Linksys 802.11b/g wireless router...

First off, gigabit ethernet is a HUGE pipe that will absolutely not be utilized no matter what LAN gaming environment you're running. The only time you'll see gigabit ethernet filled up is with a very busy server in a medium to large sized corporate environment, or in inter-switch uplinks in a corporate environment. I don't know exactly what kind of bandwidth games eat up online, but you know that dude next to you in CS:S is on dial-up so it isn't exactly bandwidth-intensive. The whole gigabit NIC craze just cracks me up for enthusiast motherboards anyways...even if you have a local router that negotiates to 1000/Full your cable modem uplink is going to be like 2Mbps, so you can do the math.

Secondly, what's this whole "108Mbps total data rate" thing about? Is that the total bandwidth of the backplane on the router? If that's the case, then the gigabit ethernet is yet again a total sham. Does it mean the total aggregate wireless bandwidth? If that's the case, then that means you can only have a max of 2 802.11g associations at one time -- 54mbps x 2 = 108mbps. Or maybe they mean that's a single .11g connection at 54mbps full duplex, which = 108mbps aggregate. Which if that's the case, then duh, it's like saying my memory bandwidth is 400Mhz when it's actually 200Mhz but in dual-channel mode (2x200=400). Both are true, and to advertise a computer as 400mhz external clock would be misleading to someone who wasn't in the know. Just like this is misleading.

Anyhow, networking hype gets to me quite a bit and I wanted to throw this out there in case anybody felt differently about this product. Seems like a big waste to me...

That made me laugh. Maybe the OP would like to buy the extended warranty on those for only $14.95......

OP, good rant

I totally agree... the 108Mb thing is only achieved if you have a special "gamer" network card to connect to the "gamer router" somehow they double the throughput with some proprietary junk, doubling 802.11G.... lol marketing scam!

D-link is too smart. They want to start a new generation of kids who dont want to be him, just beat him. Besides if they have him as endorser, hell try to create his own stuff for d-link and ruin the company.

Just look at that guys mouse. haha

I game on an SMC Wireless B router with low reception from my room and I own. I should rebadge it and sell it on ebay for $2xx.

I'm not sure what prompted the attack on this DLink router but I'll try to provide some accurate info about it.

1) The router has a 10/100/1000 switch built in. The gigabit backbone is for connecting your WIRED PC's together, not for connecting to your Cable/DSL service. That WAN port is 10/100.

2) The 108Mbps is only active on wireless chipsets that support it. Many Netgear and DLink 3rd party wireless adapters support it and almost all Atheros SuperG+ Wireless chipsets in many laptops take advantage of the higher 108Mbps speeds. It is true that you'll never see that kind of throughput but the potential is there to give you faster transfer than 54Mbps.

3) This is the part that everyone overlooks and this is critical. The router is faster than almost all other consumer level routers available. It has a 250mhz processor and a hardware QOS controller. The "Gamefuel" feature is basicaly preset port mapping settings. The real advantage of this router is that it can handle serious transfers and not lock up every 24hours.

Take any $60 router out there and set it up as follows:

-WPA wireless encryption
-6 Concurrent active wireless connections
-4 different port forwarding settings to four different PC's (Bittorrent,eMule,WinMX,and remote desktop access)

You will be probably be rebooting that router every other day if not sooner.

The DLink Gamer routers will handle this type of load day in and day out. It is much more robust than your run of the mill Linksys,Dlink, Netgear routers.

These routers aren't for everybody but if you Bittorrent/WinMX/eMule often it is well worth the price.

Hope this contribues to the conversation.

Bittorrent/WinMX/eMule? Me and my roommate have that running all the time. Also add in the WoW playing and CSs lan parties and I never had to touch my router.

Bittorrent,WinMX, and eMule use specific TCP/IP Ports to communicate. When these ports are set from within the router to FORWARD to a particular PC on your network that system is going to have a much faster connection to said service.

I thought this router is supposed to prioritize gaming before these kinds of applications and that's what it is all about. So you only need it if you game a lot on a populated network.

Thats its main claim to fame. From the reviews I have seen it gets good marks too. Obviously not everyone needs such a router. Its directed at a certain niche of users.
