My wife wants to be able to use her computer from the kitchen. Our current set includes BlueTooth mouse and keyboard. We have an extra CRT. So I was thinking is all we'd need was a BlueTooth monitor reciever adapter, or transmitter and reciever adapters to act as a secondary display... Doing searches, all I can find on this is crap about baby monitors and security type stuff. Can any point me in the right direction?

I don't think such a beast exists

best bet would be something like an Avocent Longview, that would put KB/Monitor/Mouse over Cat5 to a remote box. I use one here at work all the time, works great.

50ft (at the most) isn't too long for a video cable? What would be required at a minimum to get a wireless remote login, if I were to build a computer to task. Cheap motherboard, little memory, 4 GB HDD, but what about video and memory? Would video have to match what the main PC was doing, or is all the horsepower of GPUs going into creating and not displaying?

I found this: http://www.everythingusb.com/tritton_see2_usb_2.0_svga_adapter.html, but as I recall the max length on USB is far short of the 30'-50' necessary.

diskless linux box that remotes into your windows box and uses it's horsepowere would be dirt cheap and easy...can't play games over RDP though.

if you are going to do a cable run, look for a longview, they follow (I think) cat5e restrictions.

USB is about 15'.

However you can buy a self powered USB hub ($10) and put it in the middle.

So it would be 15' USB Hub 15'

Viewsonic make a device called a Wireless Tablet Client that would do the trick for you. These use Windows Remote Desktop Client. They used to have an older model that sat in a cradle at your computer. You used it as your regular monitor. When you wanted to go mobile, youi just pulled it out of the cradle. You can prob still find them on eB@y.

Actually, I googled that Advocent Longview, and they do make a wireless KVM solution now. Check it out here:

Advocent Longview Wireless KVM

I don't think it's worth $700 though!

Good suggestions, as far as they go, but the tablet and existing wireless solutions are way too expensive ($50 for a wireless mouse; $150 for a wireless PalmPilot; $350 for a wireless video transmitter :disgust: ). Usb is out, as the cabling would need to be under the house, and powering hubs, be they inside or under, would be too difficult, and very inflexible.

What about other wired solutions? Firewire or S-video or all those "other" wires that I've never needed? She has a Radeon X1600, which has HDTV and S-Video. Would any be more suitable to this? What's involved in fiber-optic, and could that be viable? Fiber is thin enough, wiring it inside would be fine.

If your expense start to get into the hundreds you are much better of finding an inexpensive second hand humble Wireless Laptop.
