I was ordering our first N routers for our company and I noticed you can get a/g/n or g/n routers. We have no use for 802.11a by itself, would it make any difference in just going with the g/n variety?
It's a huge difference in speed. The 5 Ghz spectrum is also much less crowded. Make sure you get the a/g/n variety for the most flexibility, performance and least interference. Just make sure it can use both the 2.4 (g) and 5 Ghz (a) spectrums at the same time.
No way on earth would I put in a 802.11n AP that didn't operate in the 5 ghz spectrum. No way.
Bottom line is you want to be able to get a device that supports 2.4 and 5ghz at the same time, that way you have more available slots to the users as far as frequency is concerned, as well as the ability for a user to move frequency if one is noisy. If I had to pick one it would be 5ghz most of the time, but there are instances where 2.4 is the better choice plus some devices dont support 5ghz
