i want to set up a wireless network between two houses. they are about 900 feet apart. the signal has to pass throw two walls then the rest is all out side. is that to far for most hubs to get a good signal? would i need a range extindind antenna?
I have a SMC 7004AWBR router at home. I have tested the range on that with a Cisco aironet and I can go as far as 1.5 houses down. I don't think that's even close to your 900 feet range. But if your wireless router is home use like mine.. I don't think it can go that far. Even if you put some extended antanas I don't think it would work.. if it does I think the quality of the speed will be dramatic decrease because of the distance.
I have seen a few directional lazer and microwave products but the names escape me, try web searches, also a saw a home made 5KM 10Mbps/Mbaud thing this guy designed and you could build yourself you will have to try altavista for it though.
900 feet for bridging with directionals is pretty easy even with SOHO equipment BUT that is with line of sight. The obstructions to the radiation pattern is what might or will cause you problems. No way of saying for sure until you try it. Probably would not get an 11 Mb link but it really depends on the makeup of the obstructions.
