example: Upgraded my gfs comp from a 486DX to a 2.26ghz, 512MB RDRAM, Ti4200 128MB, WD1000JB system. She said she cant notice the speed increase.... why? Lets look at her program list : Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, AIM, ICQ, Adobe Photoshop, Imesh, Adaware. THATS IT. I wasted an enormous amount of money so she could use 1% of the cpu (she doesnt use photoshop at all, just to convert file extensions for sending pics).

Edit: I forgot to mention she is A+ certified and has a degree in networking. So while being knowledgeable about comps, she just doesnt use hers.

Based on what I see and my work experience, the majority of girls that use computers usually use it for chatting purposes and/or for writing their papers. Other than that, the box is virtually useless to them (the box = computer for you smart alecs). Why is that? It's not like men are over exposed to the availability and the usefulness of computers.

one of my computer science major friends, she is a woman . a cute one too. and she loves going to fry's, knows all about computers and is a total geek. they do exist. i think maybe pre existing social stereotypes have steered women away from computers, but it is changing.

My mom has played through Blake Stone, Doom 1-2, Heretic, Hexen 1-2, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood 1, Quake 1-2, Half-Life and Unreal 1.

Adult women now outnumber teen boys as game players, though I wonder how much of that is from the stereotypical Sims and EverQuest. Not that my mom likes anything but the shooters

People are free to do what they will, but this is an example of how genetically men and women truly are different. Guys and girls for the most part have different interests. Nothing wrong with that. No one should say "you can't do this cause you're a girl" but we can't say that everything should be perfectly equal for the sake of equality. Look at the ratio in AT or at an engineering school. I don't think it's because girls are st00pid, just most aren't interested in computers and engineering. Should an engineering school strive for a 50:50 ratio in an attempt at equality if only 5% of applicants are female? Of course not, yet some of them do just for the sake of PC.

I've read articles on that and thought it was the most ridicious misappropriation of funds and manpower that I've ever seen. You can't just make all women more interested in technology by throwing money at the problem. Would I like to see more women in technology? Sure. Do I think we should start advertising campaigns and have colleges actively recruit women? No. They should want to do it of their on ambition, just like everything else.

The reason for the schizm between men and women on computers is that most women see computers as a tool, and most men see computers as a toy. Therefore men are more likely to derive enjoyment out of said computer than women, and become more interested in them. I read that somewhere.
