I don't understand how men could live without women and women could live without men.

It's all about reciprocity. Not one sex could live without each other. Unless, ofcourse, if you are gay. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Smiz, the answer is:

I personally do not care if you do any/all of the things on your list.

My point is, has been, and will be that it is simply idiotic to look at a person and based solely on gender make an assumption about that person's capabilities.

If this thread had been "Men vs. Cooking" I'd still have been just as persistent in TRYING to get this point across.

Wyvrn, I'm sorry, I used "misquote" when I meant "taken out of context". Your intent was still to warp the quote's original meaning. That makes you way less than worthy of even bothering to continue any discussion with.

Prodigy, come on over for dinner - I'd be more than happy to cook for you. Tell your mommy I'll help her buy a nice shiny new computer with the insurance money.

I for one haven't tried to say that women aren't as good with computers as men. The only observation I was making was that most power users I know are men. This in no way is meant to indicate that men are superior, just that men are more interested in this type of thing. I completely agree with your above quote and have said numerous times in this thread that people should not be judged based on the tendencies of the group they belong to. But nothing is wrong with generalizing about an entire group based on characteristics of many of the members of that group. It will be true in most cases, but of course there will be exceptions.

<< See if you can find a female who doesn't like solitaire and taco bell >>

Is someone looking for me?

Guess what... I don't like to play computer games at all... ya know why? I'd rather be pumping iron and kicking up the dirt on the trails. I don't like my fun to be so sedentary... I want to move my whole body when I play. I have to work at the computer because it's my job to write... and I hang out here and do some other things because it helps break up the monotony. I'm never on AIM or anything like that because that would mean sitting still for too long.

The thing about this thread is that there is a subtle undertone of somehow males are better than females based on their personal interests. Even if that wasn't the intention of the thread, somehow that lovely sentiment comes shining through from some of you.

Pooh on those who think one way is better than another, and pooh on those who buy into stereotypes and gross generalizations.

Hooray for those who realize that it is the differences between us all that makes life interesting, and the wonderful individual variation among all women and all men that makes it worth getting to know people.

So there!

No one here is trying to stop women from doing whatever they want. All that is being said is that MOST women that we have all noticed do particular things. What is wrong with observation??

Like I have said, I do not apply this observation to every single girl I meet. Our world is divided into groups and there is nothing you can do about it. College enrollment numbers, insurance rates, census data, and many other statistics are all divided by race, religion, sex, age, etc. Then from these numbers such observations as "More women chose to go into teaching professions than men" are drawn.

What the hell is wrong with that??

Do I as a man take it as them saying I would be a worse teacher than a female counterpart? Of course not. Do I know that there are excellent male teachers? Of course I do. Don't confuse observation with sexism.

Nothing is wrong with that observation. As someone who has studied Sociology, I understand qualitative research. It's not the best way to come to a conclusion, but for some things there is no real alternative. I suppose no one is interested in funding a wordwide study here, so we can only make suppositions and theories and nothing else

It is the inference that some of you (not all of you) make that women are inferior to men as a consequence of these differences. Of course, I know this place is a Boy's Club, but evolve or go the way of the dinosaur!

Read some of the replies carefully and you will see that there are a lot of condescending attitudes out there.... as though men are somehow smarter and superior because of these aforementioned differences.

That is what I am addressing here, nothing else.

I think I basically agree with that. No on ever said women could not do what men do with computers, and I think some women may be a little defensive here. I grew up in a single parent household. My mom was mom, dad, and everything else. I am in no way against strong women, in fact I married one She will make more money as a doctor than I do working helpdesk, and she is in fact more aggressive in life in general. I am proud of her

I hope I did not come across as condescending, that was not my intent at all.

I've managed to stay away from the forums and this thread for a couple of days now, and at the risk of beating the dead horse, I'd just like to add my two cents to this thread.

The diversity of members here in Off Topic was part of what gave me the courage to register and start posting. There seems to be a little bit of everything in here, and more often than not, I used to come here to get a good laugh (thanks to the prime neffing of Adul, ltk and GF), get educated (thanks to Russ, Denis, WombatWoman, Isla, Ladi and a whole host of names I'm temporarily forgetting) and just generally feel like I was part of the community, even though I only post about 4 times a day.

The pics of hot chicks don't bother me, the politics I can live with, and the occasional flame war I can avoid. But what I won't sit and be quiet for is an attitude that a minority of members seem to have that somehow certain kinds of women are less. Less attractive, less intelligent, and heaven help us, occasionally less human (yeah, I'm talking to you, Zoson). I am guilty of bringing my own issues into this discussion, and I apologize for that as much as thereds has been apologizing for not intending to start a sexist thread.

When I see:

<< Based on what I see and my work experience, the majority of girls that use computers usually use it for chatting purposes and/or for writing their papers. Other than that, the box is virtually useless to them (the box = computer for you smart alecs). Why is that? It's not like men are over exposed to the availability and the usefulness of computers. >>

I hear: I've noticed that the majority of girls who turn a computer on are kind of dumb. I mean, they only use it for gossiping and playing silly mindless games that don't involve blasting the crap out of the enemy. I don't think many girls are smart enough to do what we boys do, to get into hardware, programming, etc. It must be genetic, since girls are exposed to computers the same as boys.

That may not be what you intended to say, thereds, but it's what SOME women hear. (trying not to over-generalize) Coming after threads where male members de-humanized women by relating tales of mindless sexual conquests, insinuated that only ugly girls post at Anandtech with the exception of Lily27, then demeaned women of all sizes by declaring "chunky girls" were defective in every way, this was just not a good idea for a thread and couldn't help but be misinterpreted.

Does it matter if I'm 5'3", 250 lbs., with warts, moles and zits all over my face and an IQ of 80? Can I play Solitaire on the computer and still post here? Those are the kinds of things that some women might think after reading through some of the threads I've mentioned.

Do I need to pass a test to be here? Maybe we should have a weigh-in, followed by nude pictures then a written and oral exam on computers before membership is approved (but let's make it for men and women). If it matters to anyone (and I don't care if it does or not), you can see what I look like by clicking on the link in my sig line, then any of the articles listed. I write small, user-friendly financial news articles on a part-time basis, help run a successful BBS full-time, am working on a book with a good chance of publication part-time, write freelance articles for magazines part-time, am designing a couple of new Web sites with a partner part-time, and somehow manage to be a pretty damn good single mom 24 hours a day. Am I saying all this to "prove" to you all that I should be respected and allowed to be here? Nope. Maybe to prove that generalizations are rarely true when applied to a unique group such as the women of Anandtech are.

Thereds, I don't hate you (or SmiZ or anyone else who's just expressing an opinion here). But can you see why this stuff is hurtful to some of us?

Amen sistah CGirl. Nice to see you are stil here.

I had avoided this thread until today, and when I read it I realized that the reason the other women were upset about it had to do with the tone.

I addressed it in my posts and now CGirl has confirmed what I suspected... this became an issue because of the way such things are used to put women in a 'less than men' category.

I do know a little bit about computers and why there are more men in the field, blah blah blah. It has to do with socialization, and that is all. It is not that men are smarter or 'wired' to be more computer oriented... it is that from the cradle they are encouraged to be involved with technology while girls are encouraged to be Britney Spears.

Fortunately, this IS changing. My middle child has shown a REMARKABLE aptitude for computers as well as the piano. Mr Isla is delighted, to say the least.

My last words on the subject are these: One day, when you have children, let them know that they can be anything they want to be. Encourage them to be themselves and not what society expects them to be. If you have a son who is nurturing, let him nurture... he might make an excellent doctor or teacher one day. If you have a girl who is mechanically inclined, let her be! She might end up being a rocket scientist.

Let each of you reach your own highest potential without allowing gender stereotypes keep you from being everything you can be as an individual.

The End.

CGirl, if I may call you that, I didn't mean to start a war of the sexes here, but I have obviously failed.

Should I start one that says Men vs. Cooking as previously mentioned.

I guess you are right. But, then again, with all the problems in the world today, a problematic thread in a hardware forum is quite miniscule, don't you think?

thereds, you can call me whatever you want.

I know you weren't trying to start anything, and I don't really think you did - but yours was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, so you got the brunt of the frustration some of us have been feeling lately.

I'm not trying to continue anything, believe it or not, just to offer my reason for being so upset and leaving for a few days. I won't say your views on women vs. computers are wrong (because they're yours and you're entitled to think what you want), but just offering a broader scope with which to view them and reminding the gents here that just as they don't like to be pigeonholed based on their jobs, wallets or penis size, we women don't enjoy being labeled because of generalizations based on our gender.

We've come a long way, baby!

Women prefer emotional crap and socializing with other people. Apparently they don't see the social aspect of fragging the sh-- out of someone in CS
