Women vs. Computers.

I was going to say that after reading through this thread the only thing I learned is that women used to actually post here, but then you spoiled that.

I wonder how many of us in general who were really into building computers back in the early 2000s still have any kind of interest or excitement in it. If I have to build a computer now for myself or someone else I'm going to be dreading it.

Based on what I see and my work experience, the majority of girls that use computers usually use it for chatting purposes and/or for writing their papers. Other than that, the box is virtually useless to them (the box = computer for you smart alecs). Why is that? It's not like men are over exposed to the availability and the usefulness of computers.

Any reason or do most women just dislike using the computer for anything other the aforementioned reasons?

The majority it seems do not, but there are 2 women in my team that are very knowledgable, and I know of others in other depts, but they certainly are outnumbered by the men.

I think though for us older folk, many women simply were not into gaming, which technically was the initial draw for most males to computers. Once women found there were useful non-gaming uses for computers, they started using them more.

Sometimes I wish I'd never introduced my wife to the internet shopping experience 20 years ago :/

I am in a beta for a VR game right now where it seems a majority of the dev and coding team are females, so that was something new.

All I know is my lady neighbor (real estate agent, friend for 40 years) has me fix her phone or portable PC at least once a week. Phones have been Galaxy 6 and 7. Portables were Win 7 and currently Win 10.

Never seems to have a problem with her Win 7 desktop.

That is your answer. Woman are a very spongy emotional creature. At least that's been my observation. HAHAHA.

For me, I use "the box" for all sorts of commuting. I have a FTP server used to transfer files with my phone mostly anywhere in the world, I game, I use VM's, etc, etc, etc.

My mom is a perfect example of a chatty woman. She turns the computer on an immediately either goes to Facebook or her E-mail. That's all she uses the thing for!

There may not be an interest at all. I mean, do you care what was posted back in 2004? It's all old, irrelevant crap. But some post's and the communication could be useful in a historical context. If we are still all here and/or an EMP doesn't wipe out the hard drives the database's that hold this data, then perhaps it will be interesting. I remember seeing an old post of mine on another tech forum back in '05 about upgrading a Dell 4600. Man, I updated every part except the motherboard. Reading that thread again was nostalgic because that was when I had a fat tax return.

How many men do you see gabbing on the phone for a couple hours a night gossiping about this and that? Not too many.

ICQ, AIM, and the like are slowly replacing phones and other traditional forms of communication. It's just a transition into technology.

In the time since this thread was created, I sired an offspring (female) who is now a PC builder, running Linux distros and VMs and so forth!

Pretty interesting to get a 15 yr old snapshot to compare to today. My observation is that 15 yrs ago I almost never saw a woman in IT other than the odd manager who actually didn't know much about IT but was good at managing people. I still see a lot of that but I also see knowledgeable and talented young women in the industry now as well. My perceptions of users has somewhat shifted as well. While the number of clueless female users seems pretty constant it seems that there are a lot more clueless male users in the pool than I remember from 15 yrs ago.

I love building computers, especially my favorite type, which are super-tiny SFF builds (think "Silverstone PT13-B" here). Have been doing it for 15 years now, and will do it as long as I can.

Aside from me, the secretary is most adept person with computers in the office. Not a high bar to pass for sure, but still :^D
