In This other thread I started I discussed getting a TiVo to replace a dying DirecTV receiver. Thanks for all the input.

Well, we did it. Ordered a DirecTiVo on Monday morning and it arrivead and was installed Tuesday morning at 8:50AM (just under 24 hours after i ordered it) Total cost was $69.22 ($49 + $14.95 S&H +NYS Tax)

I am impressed so far. My Wife agrees - we don't know why we didn't get one of these sooner! TiVo ROCKS!!!!!

P.S. in my above-linked thread I discussed hoping to get a new R-10 model D*TiVo, but they are not sending them out with technicians yet (you CAN buy one at CC or BB for $99). I ended up with a Philps DSR708, which is a series 2 70-hour unit. Not bad for under $70 installed!

More and more prime time lineups are using the NBC model now and running short/over the 30 minute marks. FOX has started doing it quite a bit. Running the in between show ads before ending one and then starting the next program without commercials. You end up missing the last minute or two of some shows if you aren't careful or cancelling out other items to be recorded because times conflict (ex. Friends ends at 9:01 so it doesn't record CSI at 9:00).

I think TiVo is great. I have a TiVo and Replay. I'm in the minority because while I like the units, it hasn't really been more than a VCR for me. I still prefer flipping around channels and usually flip around for 10 or 20 minutes before I finally give up and see if anything recorded interests me.

The only bummer is that I just KNOW that my remaining RCA receiver (DRD450RG) downstairs in my rec room is now in dire jeopardy of being replaced by a TiVo! (Honey, can we get one of these for downstairs too...........)

If you are an existing DirecTV customer, you can get one from them for $49+$14.95 S&H and tax. TiVo adds $4.99/month to your DirecTV bill (for as many TiVos as you can fit in your house!)

You can get TiVo service without going through DirecTV (use with cable for example) and subscribe directly to TiVo, but it is $12.95/month AND an additional charge of $6.95 per additional receiver. I think BestBuy or Costco had some standalone (non DirecTV models) on sale.

Worst part of TIVO is that you'll find yourself looking for the remote so you can rewind or pause radio and/or events that happen in real life.

we have dishnetwork and just got one of their dvr models for free including shipping ($5.00 a month rate). best part is that we've been a customer for a few years now, so it wasn't one of their signing up bonus deals.

Yeah - forgot about that

Now if only DirecTV will enable the USB ports for networking in their new software release so we can get either HMO or TiVoToGo over a wireless network (without custom hacking that is ) this will move from merely great to the best thing since sliced bread!

I miss our DirecTIVO, it's simply the best DVR I have ever used.

Last week CompUSA had Tivo series 2 for FREE after MIR or you could PM. A few lucky AT'ers got in on that.

I would love to try out tivo. I have watched the demo on tivo.com a few times that made me drool a bit. Particularly since I don't sit at home on my recliner during primetime TV when a lot of my favorite shows come on...

$99 is just a bit steep for the reciever though, i think.

I disagree, it's totally worth $99.

What's steep are the Tivo fees ($12.95 per month -or- $299 lifetime fee).

It would be nice if they had a limited promo $199 including lifetime activation. Don't mind me I'm just a cheap ass

Oh, I'm lucky alright. I really should have bought two though.

Incidentally, TivoToGo hasn't been released yet. Depending on how much they charge for it, I think I'll probably use it too. It'll be a great way to get my TiVo to play in the living room.

Quick question, I saw some TiVo's being sold here and was getting a bit confused by it. Aside from those TiVo's being factory renewed, do they still carry the same warranty and such? $49.99 is more down my alley.

Also, I see there is a $100 rebate. It says it only applies to specific TiVo's recievers, i'm assuming.... How can I figure out which one I need to purchase offline to be eligible for the rebate? The model numbers are all foreign to me.

Are you saying Tivo is going to charge MORE for TivoToGo functionality or will that be included with Tivo Plus?

me and my gf got the comcast box with the built in DVR over a month ago. Now that she knows how to set it to record stuff while shes gone, I have to watch whatever she is recording, and now shes recording stuff like every day when I get home from work.

So instead of watching what I want, when I want, I sit there and let the TV tell me what I'm watching, and when I'm watching it. grrr
