I just bought the book today.

I've been meaning to pick it up at the library, but I've been reading a few other books that have piqued my interest. Finally decided it was time to read this book (about to wrap up Neuromancer), and went ahead and bought it instead.

You better get to reading the book. That way when you hear other people talking about the movie you can proudly interject into the conversation a statement of you reading the book. You can then ask the others participating in the conversation if they have also read the book. If the answer is no, display a smirk and then go into the differences between what is shown in trailers to what is in the book. It's your job to educate these people and let them know you are an expert on the source material, not them.

I remember seeing the trailer back in November and thinking I should read the book before the movie came out. A friend and I were discussing Zombies and WWZ was brought up which reminded me about the book. I just picked up the Audiobook and I like it so far, so I did more research on the movie.

Oh. My. God. This move has FAIL written all over it:

Wikipedia said:
In May 2012, it was reported that production would return to Budapest for seven weeks of additional shooting.[48] The following month, screenwriter Damon Lindelof was hired to rewrite the film's third act with reshoots scheduled to begin in September or October 2012.[49] However Lindelof, who also reworked Prometheus and co-wrote Star Trek Into Darkness, did not have time to script the new ending and in July 2012, Paramount hired Lindelof's Lost partner, Drew Goddard.[50] Lindelof explained there were inefficiencies in the script in relation to the shooting, which started before the script was finalized thus making the ending "abrupt and incoherent" and was missing a large chunk of footage. Lindelof presented two options to executives, who ultimately choose to shoot 30 to 40 minutes of additional footage to make a coherent ending. The re-shoots coupled with other overages caused the budget to balloon to around $200 million, which shocked Paramount president Marc Evans.[1]

In March 2013, it was reported that Paramount changed a scene in the film in which the characters speculate that the zombie outbreak originated in mainland China in hopes of landing a distribution deal in the country.[51] It was also revealed that several of the scenes shot in Budapest were dropped from the final cut in order to water down the film's political undertones, and steer it towards a more generally friendly summer blockbuster.[52]

Music [edit]

Just when I thought Hollywood could be any dumber, they go do something like this, AND TOTALLY NOT REDEEM THEMSELVES.

Haha.

So they're relying on Lindelof's screenplay writing expertise and advice on what works and what doesn't? Haven't they seen Prometheus to understand his writing genius?

And that Marc Evans guy was "shocked" at the $200mil cost?.....Doesn't the dude follow dailies and costs as President of a major movie studio?

Sounds like Hollywood is run by the 3 Stooges.

If anything can finally kill of the zombie movie its this one.

I'll see it in theaters.

But I'm not expecting Oscar-winning, "best Zombie movie ever" material.
Which is sad, because the book was pretty damn awesome.

For anyone who read the book, I can imagine the entire Redeker Plan will be either entirely scrapped or muddied so bad it loses the gravity it had. And if it does remain, at least in name, or even in totality, I bet the origins of it, and that of the man behind it, will be completely altered to be more politically correct.

Now that I'm thinking of it, so much is going to change to keep it "summer action flick" material, and more family friendly.
It wasn't a particularly gruesome/gory read, nor did it seem shocking enough or whatever to demand an R-rating if translated perfectly into cinema, but... it wasn't entirely politically correct, or, more to the point, it was perfectly politically correct. Who did what and why seemed perfectly plausible - the politics, pitfalls, and effects (and how individual characters reacted to them) seemed eerily plausible. It really did seem like something straight out of a history book if the shit hit the fan today (or around this general time period).

It'll be a fun movie though, I would be absolutely shocked if they did such a bad job that it doesn't end up being a worthwhile watch. But I'm expecting it to completely walk all over the source material in order to appeal to more people (especially foreign nations). After hearing the cost, I'd be shocked if it's not changed as much as I expect. They don't want to risk that kind of money being politically "incorrect" - even if it's accurate.

The subject material has HBO mini-series written all over it.

Trying to shoehorn this book into a 90 minute movie is geared for epic FAIL.

Seems way different than the book. It's still a zombie movie though. Like pizza, I'd still eat it even if it was mediocre.

I get the feeling studio execs know that.
Especially the ones who make science fiction movies.

Hollywood needs to STOP GIVING LINDELOF WORK!

But... Lost, man.
and Cowboys & Aliens
and both Star Trek movies

Other than Lost having early moments of some deep concepts and showcasing some cerebral moments, his kind of work isn't about making the next big thinker - it's about some depth to otherwise very enjoyable popcorn-ready, entertainment, and helping everyone involved laugh their way to the bank.

Personally, I enjoy his touch to cinema. But I look elsewhere for my cerebral thrillers and whatnot.

I have a feeling World War Z will make After Earth look like The Happening.

Then you should enjoy Lindelof's masterpiece:

lol

Never ended up seeing that one. Still want to.

Note: I only spoke of Lost when I discussed anything of depth. And that's not to say anything of plot holes, dropped plot lines, random new plot lines, magic, deus ex machina (figuratively, and I think... literally, perhaps? ), etc etc etc.

As in, what I studied during school before and while I also took a writing class that was more about analyzing cinema and tv and whatnot than actually writing... because I think it was my final project on Lost and all of the solid uses of the soft sciences: sociology, psychology, human behavior as encapsulated by many behavioral theories.

Also, in defense of writers, you also have to add in the fact they answer to people too... actually, writers tend to be at the bottom of the "I answer to.." chain. They can frequently write masterpieces only to have them thrown away by Hollywood decision makers who want "less of that, more of this" in the effort to sell more in the end.

I consider the original, abridged version of the Audiobook to basically be the WWZ film. There were great actors reading as each character and it was cut down to about six hours. I don't think it would get better than this with the abridged source material unless it were an HBO miniseries like dr150 suggested.

HBO making a zombie series would rock! Will never happen.

I didn't read the book, great movie. The pacing was perfect, and imo it wasn't Hollywood overdone, no agendas beating you in the face. It helped that even though the theater was filled to capacity I didn't hear a single word from the audience through the entire movie, at times it felt that there were only a couple other people in the theater with us.

Saw the movie tonight with the family. Everyone liked it. Pretty intense. Very good acting. Pitt did a nice job with the reluctant hero bit. Has some plot holes and some questionable albiet amusing parts.

Recommend.
