That's just about the funniest restaurant story ever. I would have been pissed if he hadn't bought the meal for you though. Time to get on the phone w/ the health department that very second.

You could have handled the situation better.

Well, we all were dressed nicely, it was a birthday party. I was wearing this nice polo shirt, and was well groomed. 3 girls and myself, wouldn't call us a bad crowd by appearance only.

I do admit the cornbread stuff was retarded, but it wasn't loud and obnoxious. But the that didn't occur until after we got the bad service, so it couldn't have been that. I do not think I said the phrase more than once or twice at the diner to be honest, though i was joking around with my buddies earlier saying I should ask if they had cornbread.

What would you have suggested I had done? We sat down, got bad service and got harrassed. I didn't say anything rude to the waitress, nor to the cook. Something I said was misinterpeted, and nothing I could have done would have pervented that. Why should I apologize for there misunderstanding, I told him not to worry about it, which is exactly what he should have done. Sure the phrase was stupid, but what does my personal conversations with my friends that has nothing to do with the waitress effect the quality of service I recieve? I really don't see how I handled it wrong, nor could have handled it better.

I finally remembered how I got to saying it. Back at the house they had asked what I wanted to eat, and I said "Cornbread" in the hick-ish accent, then thats how it got stuck in my head.

Well, the manager didn't like you telling him what to do, especially when he still thought you called his waitress a b!tch. You should have told him that there was a misunderstanding, and that you were sorry that you offended the waitress and if she could come over so you could apologize.

A little bit of niceness goes a long way.

Thanks. This actually occured PRE-Cell phone rollout.... If you live long enough, life becomes funny.
Manager bought one meal. Never went back. Chain died in the mid '80s.

Finally a cart came up and we took a couple of dishes. Waited, waited, etc... Flagged down one of the guys that comes by to add up your check and asked if we could have some water. He said he'll get a waitress to do it.... waited, waited, waited.... finally one of us got up and walked up to the bar area and started filling some glasses with water, and brought them back to the table. Waited, waited, etc...
no carts were even coming down out end. So we flagged down the guy again, and asked him to add up our check; i think it came out to like $12. Threw down the cash and got up to leave, when all of a sudden, one of these cart ladies came running up to us telling us that we did not tip. There was a note on the menu that there's a mandatory 15% tip for any size party. She didn't speak english very well, and i asked here if she knew what TIP meant. well she didn't understand what i said, and i told here that we had to get our own water, and some of us didn't get any food because she and her friends hadn't come by. Turned around and walked out with her screaming at me.

never been back to that place again. the sad thing is that everyone had told me what a great place it was.

Nothing like a good dim sum story. Today I went to some place in Alhambra, Ritz Palace or something. It wasn't too busy, but the carts never came to me with food! I was looking for some of the usual stuff, but everytime a cart came by, it was usually empty or left with what I call "undesireables". I said screw it, and just flagged down a guy to total it up. Tried to pay with credit, guy goes $15 min purchase! I said "It's illegal to make it a manditory min purchase!" Guy goes "no it isn't". Instead of arguing over $2, I just said "Just get me some more food." Got stuck with "undesireable" gailon plate for $2. Then guy comes back with credit card, stands around as I sign it. I get up, guy goes "hey 15% perrrcent !" I just say no and keep walking out, gf embarassed at my no $2 tip. He follows us out, and he goes "I go call bo-lice you no pay!" We just kept walking and other people outside start laughing, not sure at me or with me.

Sadly this story is repeated so many times at Asian restarants.

Now that it is mentioned, I do agree that I shouldn't be telling him what to do in his own store. I meant it in a "chill out, take it easy" kind of way, not the "go away" kind of attitude, I can see if he misunderstood that as well.

A little bit of niceness goes a long way.

They need to take some of that advice. I find myself very nice to people, but if that isn't shown back, there is no reason to bother continuing being nice. I had greeted her with a "Hi", and she just looked at me coldly, and I had told the manager "have a nice day" as he was leaving. She gave me a cold look, and he accused me of something I didn't do.... where was the kindness then? After all, they're the ones trying to keep a customer. I do not believe I went out of line throughout the whole experience.

Sounds like that line was somewhat taken from Life. There was a whole scene with Do you want your cornbread.. rather funny there, you saying it incorrectly.... not funny.
