Scratch that, a 950 here is 60% cheaper than a 1060 and 40% cheaper than a 470. Worth it for a basic medium ish 1080p card?

I'd spend the 40% and go to the 470, or if you can swing it, the 1060. The 950 is absolutely dead in the water in a 16nm world. It's false economy because it will have to be replaced years sooner than a 1060 or 470/480 would. It's just spending less today to spend more tomorrow.

If a 950 is 40% cheaper he'd have to spend 66% more to get a 470.

But yes I do agree with you. I went through the same thought process and ended up with a 470 myself. For low end-ish 1080. It's overkill, but hopefully will last longer.

How about a 4GB RX 460, what prices do you get them in your country ??

The 460 was just launched today. Wait for reviews and keep in mind that AMD GPUs age much better.

Then make up your mind.

The 950 is basically a 460 that pulls an extra 20 watts or so. So it is still perfectly relevant today. In theory the 460 makes it totally obsolete, but in reality I think the pricing and availability is going to take quite a while to filter out into the market.

Yes it well worth it, and don't forget the gtx950 will give you 20% more performance when overclocked.

The 950 is dead in the new APIs - no point considering Maxwell going further. I would use the TimeSpy benches as indicative of future worst-case GCN performance and Forza/GOW/QuantumBreak as typical console port performance.

Almost every game released in 2016 has had a Vulkan/dx12 codepath - this will only improve as time goes forward.

A 950 is 200 local or 160 USD. A 1060 is $430 or $320 USD. I could buy a 1080 (its 1200 local) but the prices are ridiculous here. The just released RX 460 is 250 local or around 200 USD. Tired of getting a cop out for a GPU deal. There is also barely remaining stock of a 390 for $360 local or 260 USD. Bleh.

EDIT: Narrowed it down - the R9 390 is $30 more local than a 470, the 390X is $60 more than a 470. An RX 480 is $30 more than a 390X, a 1060 is also $30 more for a basic Gainward model. Is a 390X worth buying now?

OP should list his country + prices if not usa. would save alot of time and allow people to help him better.

At those prices it could only be Australia. Regardless I give up, these prices are disgusting as is the lack of stock on AMDs part. Useless miners. Not buying anything until prices fall. Heavily.

The 950 isn't a bad card. It is easily outclassed. But it has some usefulness. It supports HDCP, often comes with multiple DisplayPort pots, and is actually surprisingly decent for mid- to low-end gaming. If you're OK playing at lower resolutions, you can play pretty much anything and it's not a massive sacrifice. I actually used one before my 1070 came along and I was blown away by how well it played DOOM and the Forza beta.
