I currently have an E4300 at 3.0 ghz on a gigabyte 965p-s3. Also an 8800gt.

I'm considering moving up to an e8400 and a p45 board, either the gigabyte ep45 or the asus p5q pro, then oc'ing as far as it will go.

Question is, is this worth upgrading to at the moment? Computer is mainly for gaming.

Honestly, it all depends on what games you play, and what resolution and settings you play at. Your 8800GT is a pretty good match for a 3.0 Ghz E4300. If you get a much faster CPU, then you'll just be GPU-bound in every game you play. But like I've already said, some games are CPU-bound, no matter what card you use (within reason, obviously), while other games are GPU-bound, no matter what your CPU speed. BTW, in case you were wondering, online multiplayer games are almost always CPU-bound.

It'll not make a massive difference in games if you're keeping the video card. Why not upgrade to a 4870 and keep the CPU/mobo?

I have the same setup with similar overclocks, and I play a lot of games a lot of the time. The only game I've had any performance issues with at 1920x1200 and max settings is crysis, which is completely playable at 1680x1050 high or 1920x1200 medium.

I do not believe its worth upgrading right now neither for me nor you. I may upgrade when core i7 is released, if the current processors drop accordingly in price. If not I may wait to get a mainstream i7.

I think you just have to ask yourself, are you in need of an upgrade to improve playability of your games? Or do you just have the upgrade bug.

Edit: Sidenote, if you still feel you got some cash that needs spending to upgrade your rig, consider buying a new monitor if your using a smaller/older one. I went from 17" to 24" and it was probably the best upgrade I could of bought.
