Here in the US, we pretend to care about the unborn children (but we actually care about the appearance of sexual morality instead) until they're actually born, at which point it's fuck all y'all unless you're rich.

Actually paid maternity leave sounds like another case of liberals wanting to force other people to pay for their values

Holy cow, not sure if the BBC is accurate or not, but it appears that in the US, our attitude is "fuck the children. Screw families. Profit profit profit."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22688596 Just one more reason wealth keeps getting concentrated at the top.

Not sure where the fuck you live but down in here in the Southern US my wife received paid maternity leave working for a big, evil BANK. 2 months worth.

I'm fine with it.

Equal pay for equal work. I am all about equality.

Its only equal if its biased against companies and men.......

So your idea of spreading the wealth is by giving people who do nothing money? Typical liberal.

Again.... Some of you act like a woman just wakes up and BOOM she's pregnant.

She CHOSE to have that baby. We have condoms, pills, all sorts of way to prevent pregnancy.

Since a woman CHOOSES to become pregnant she needs to have her ducks in a row before pumping a baby down the pipeline.

My sister not only gets no paid maternity leave from work, but her employer also told her 2 weeks before the baby was born that they would be dropping her from their health insurance once her unpaid maternity leave started which leaves John Q. Taxpayer to foot the bill!

That web site is full of SHIT. It makes other bogus claims like smoking isn't banned in US school.

Smoking has been banned in school for students AND teachers basically my entire life. I came up in the 80s and there were NO smoking lounges for teachers and absolutely no smoking for students.

Does that also apply to rape victims?

Funny I wonder how many people complaining about maternity leave also believe in a woman's CHOICE to abortion.

Seems like having a baby is a woman's CHOICE and others responsibility.

Yeah, we have pretty generous benefits in that department too, but it most certainly isn't universal. I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of those in the retail and foodservice industries get squat. It really depends on who you work for. Some employers even try to get out of the unpaid leave that we guarantee via the FMLA. We certainly say how much we value children, but our labor policies/laws certainly don't reflect that.

I think paid leave is great for the family but bullshit for the business. If you want to use more than your vacation time, you should quit your job and then look for a new one when you are ready to get back to work.

In Canada, you get 1 year mat leave. I think that is ridiculous.

I think this is a reasonable time to point out that the entire point of existing is to have children.

So why are women wasting time having careers?

Sounds like you think they should be back in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. Problems solved

I will pay you to work. I'm not paying leave. Maybe if I were a rich corporation, I'd reconsider.

No, you wouldn't. If enough people on the lower end of the wealth scale don't care, why should anyone near the top? If someone has got near the top of the wealth scale with your mindset all their life, are they really going to suddenly decide that their way hasn't served them so well all those years?

Sure, some people become philanthropists after achieving financial wealth, but if that was what generally happened, the world would be quite different.

In some european countries (many i'd imagine) there is some gender discrimination that results from these laws. Even though employers shouldn't (by law), they often ask whether a prospective female employee might be considering pregnancy, and it's generally just safer to go with a dude. Overall though, people aren't assholes here, and most just accept it as the cost of maintaining a civilized society.

I wouldn't even ask if a woman was considering pregnancy. I simply wouldn't hire a young woman if there's a chance that over the next five years, she's going to be gone 20% of the time (two children at 6mo a pop over five yeras) and still getting paid. That's insane. It means that woman is making 25% more than her male counterpart. Talk about sexism...

Children are a good thing for society. Usually its wise to invest in good things. But America is more worried about short and eventually its going to bite us in the ass. Maybe if corporations still paid a decent wage a 1 income family wouldn't need to worry about maternity/paternity leave and one of the parents would be home full time anyway. Assuming its a two parent family.

Then let society pay. We already do in the form of tax credits, now you expect employers to kick in even more?

Yes, tax credits aren't that great. Paid leave would benefit sociecity far more than tax credits. Like I said, if they paid a decent wage, this would be a non issue
